September Book Club Selection

Update: the drawing for this prize is now closed. We have randomly selected a winner, Irene Lenihan, commenter #798, and notified her by e-mail. Thanks to everyone who entered this giveaway. We appreciate each and every one of you. October’s giveaway is now open!

Welcome readers, new and old! Many of you are long-time She Reads members and others are stopping by for the first time after reading Sarah Jio’s devotion at Proverbs 31 Ministries. Either way, we’re glad you’re here. Sarah’s debut novel, THE VIOLETS OF MARCH is this month’s featured book club selection. For the past two years our small team has worked to find the best faith-driven fiction on the market. This month we decided to do something a little different. Instead of choosing a “Christian” novel, we’ve selected a novel written by a Christian but published in the general marketplace. It is our firm belief that these authors should be applauded and supported. Some writers of faith choose to talk about Jesus in their fiction (we’ve featured a number of those books) and others choose to talk about the things that Jesus talked about. This month’s author does the latter. And she has earned our respect. THE VIOLETS OF MARCH is haunting and heartbreaking and the author does not handle the issues in ways you might expect. It will leave you unsettled but inspired. We invite you to join us this month as we get to know Sarah and read this book together.

Those of you who have spent much time around She Reads know that we love to give stuff away. And we continue that trend with this month’s giveaway: a bag of books from Penguin Books (including other goodies from Penguin), a “take me away to Bainbridge island ” gift basket of Northwest treats from the author—all things that the characters in THE VIOLETS OF MARCH would have loved (smoked salmon, local chocolates, coffee from the author’s favorite independent Seattle roaster), an advanced copy of her next novel, THE BUNGALOW, and a few other little treats. In addition, one participant of our online book club will also win a second, smaller canvas bag filled with books, courtesy of Penguin Books. As usual, the rules for entering are simple. For the gift basket and the book prize pack, simply leave a comment on this post. Those who sign up for our online book club (it’s FREE!) and participate in this month’s discussion will automatically be entered for the additional book-filled canvas bag. For those of you who don’t have access to a local book club, this is a great option. We have hundreds of participants from the United States as well as England and Australia. Do consider joining and becoming part of this tight-knit group of fiction lovers.

And now, a bit about the book: In her twenties, Emily Wilson was on top of the world: she had a bestselling novel, a husband plucked from the pages of GQ, and a one-way ticket to happily ever after. Ten years later, the tide has turned on Emily’s good fortune. So when her great-aunt Bee invites her to spend the month of March on Bainbridge Island in Washington State, Emily accepts, longing to be healed by the sea. Researching her next book, Emily discovers a red velvet diary, dated 1943, whose contents reveal startling connections to her own life. A mesmerizing debut with an idyllic setting and intriguing dual story line, The Violets of March announces Sarah Jio as a writer to watch.

I am in a book club and this sounds perfect for us:). I am here from the Proverbs 31 devotional, love the ‘violets’ story. We have them in our yard too and have always considered them a nuisance, I will definitely reconsider that now. Thank you for the opportunity to be able to respond and enter the drawing. God is great!! Have a blessed day.

  45. Megan September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

It sounds like a great book. Please pick me. I could use a dose of encouragement right now.

  46. Linda September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am going to ask my book club if they would like to try this as our next book.

  47. Elaine September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

What an unexpected bonus that my Proverbs 31 devotion would also turn me on to a new book to read and this site! Since moving to a new town 4 years ago I have been unable to find a book club to join. I love to read and love to find good fiction written in a Christian context. I’m excited to read this book and learn about a region of our country that I am not very familiar with as well. The prize basket would be a fantabulous way to learn even more about the area and the treats it has to offer!

  48. deb September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am soo excited with today devotion and link to She Reads. I rarely get a P31 devotion that doesn’t meet me exactly where I am that day or confirm something God is speaking about! I am extremely busy and “finding” the right books to read can be difficult for me. The Violets of March has grabbed my attention and cannot wait to get my copy!

  49. Peggy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

What a blessing Proverbs31 has been in my life and the lives of my friends. We enjoy the devos every morning. This book sounsd intriguing. Can’t wait for another rainy day to devour it. Put me in the drawing, please for the bag of books and goodies.

  52. Suzie September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

    Sarah,
Your devotional is so true! There have been numerous times where I have been so busy that I do not notice the beauty around me, nor do I hear God’s voice. In this painful time of a job search, our world has become more silent, helping us “see” things more clearly and recognize the voice of our Lord again. I thank the Lord for this trial; for it has brought us closer to Him. Thank you for blessing others today.

  53. Amy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

What a wonderful devotion today. I appreciate the reminder to slow down and enjoy each moment. God is good all the time!

  54. CL September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Looks like a good book. Thanks for letting us know about it. Enjoy your holiday

  55. Debbie September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’ve let “life” keep me from taking notice of the “violets” surrounding me. Reading was always a time of refreshment for me but I somehow got away from allowing myself the enjoyment of an inspiring fictional book. I have found that my constant busy schedule has weighted me down and realize how much I miss reading. I need to take time for “me” again and this book looks like one I would enjoy. Looking forward to reading it. Thanks for posting books and authors that we can count on to provide inspiration and entertainment. The drawing is a wonderful added bonus. May God continue to bless and use your ministry.

  56. Stacey Glimpse Vaught September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  60. Amy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am an aspiring novelist (currently writing my first)… And as we all know, writers are also readers… So I’m always looking for a good new book, especially by new, up-and-coming authors. Thanks for taking a chance on a new type of book. (I, too, enjoy writing fiction that isn’t necessarily for Christian readers only… Speaking truth into a broader audience is an important and difficult task. So, thank you Sarah Jio!) I am looking forward to reading this book! The give-aways are quite exciting too! (fingers crossed!) Hope all is well in NC. God bless.

  61. phyllis trivett September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for the daily devotions, if I pause to listen to God He will always bless me through the written word. I live in a rural area and always have lots of tiny little violets every year, I have white ones too!

I always look forward to my daily devotions and was particular keen on hearing about this new book by Sarah Jio. I am going to go out and get this as soon as possible. I appreciate how an author can use her gift of writing to minister to all people and not just “Christians”. Many blessings!

  69. Kristen September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’m new to She Reads and I’m intrigued. 🙂 I read Sarah’s devotional when I walked in to work this morning and it was one of those times that a devotional shot an arrow right into a dark place in my heart. I started thinking about what I’d seen (but not seen) on the way to work this morning. Thanks for the reminder and I’m glad I read it first thing today so I can approach this day being “present” and looking for Him in the little things and frustrations as well as the pleasant and good. Her book sounds terrific and after reading her devotional, I like that I know a little of the “background” that ended up weaving it’s way through the story.

  70. Jen September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

looks like an interesting read, looking forward to the discussion

    God bless your ministry.

  92. Jady Conroy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved the devotional which led me to this website. I also write a devotional for my church newsletter each month. It is always about some aspect of Creation which makes an impression on me that month. I am somewhat of a stargazer and a dreamer and others tell me that they need reminders to help them notice things like the violets in March. I’m glad to meet a fellow traveler who is inspired by God’s beauties all around us!

Seeking the Lord in small things brings great joy and spiritual refreshment in our busy lives. As we pause to marvel, it’s an opportunity to give Him glory.

  97. Brandie September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I really enjoyed the devotional! I have three small children and am always busily working on this task or that…. I completey related to staring at the weeds only to miss the flowers.
Thanks for the reminder to be more intentional and look for God’s fingerprints everywhere.

  98. Ann September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  105. Marlene September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I so enjoy reading Proverbs 31 every weekday. It is another added blessing to my day to strengthen me and my faith along the way. I am not bragging that I enjoy reading God’s Word, rather I feel blessed to be doing so. All the different ladies in your ministry have many stories to share about their lives and happenings. It’s like having a whole bunch of new friends when I read “with” you all. I would love to win the bag of books – reading Christian, historical, romance or suspense novels is my hobby, and the punny and funny thing about this gift is it is from Penguin Group, and I LOVE penguins. So God Bless all of you and keep on writing – I love you!

  106. Shon September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This is my first time here. I’m enjoying looking around. I also liked my first devotional this morning.

    Thanks

  107. Jessica September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

My family loves to read. Whenever we finish a new book we pass it on to others. Looks like a great one to share and talk about:)

  108. Peggy Wilson September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you so much for your wonderful insites to God’s bountiful blessings. As a cancer survivor I try to stop and enjoy God’s bounty each day and to spread His glorious blessings each moment until He calls me home. Today’s devotional was perfectly said…..Blessings and Love….Peggy

  109. TerriL September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I found the link to She Reads in my Encouragement email this morning. It looks like my kind of place and The Violets of March looks like my kind of book.

I do more reading on my Kindle now but still love the feel of a good book in my hands. Btw, this book is available for the Kindle.

  110. Michelle Campbell September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Wow, I had never heard of this book or author, but I read my daily encouragement email from Proverbs 31 ministries and I was so touched by the story of the voilets. I am a busy college student and just yesterday I was walking across campus with my roommate and she stopped by a tree and said – “look at how perfect these flowers are!” We stopped and looked at the pretty flowers for a long time. I pass them every day, but not I stop and thank God for them. They remind me every day I walk to class that my God is creative, beautiful, and even makes things for my pleasure.

Thanks for sharing this message and I hope someday I can read your novels.

  111. JJ Williams September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

What a great devotion! I’m always trying to remember to stop rushing through life…to treasure every moment. Too often I get caught up in the flow of life, and at times I feel pulled in a such a strong current…I forget to notice even the small things, especially with my three kids. I blink, and they’re already a year older. Thank you for the reminder!

    Many Blessings,
    JJ Williams

  112. Kathryn September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

So glad the book was mentioned in today’s devotional–ordered it today from our library. Will be good to sit and read awhile when the kids go back to school. Might help with letting my first one leave the nest…….

  113. Cheryl September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I appreciated the message in today’s devotional. I too often overlook the beautiful things in my life. I would love to read The Violets of March.

  114. Emily September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thanks so much for sharing this message. As with most all of the devotions from Proverbs 31, this came at just the “right” time for me!

  115. Stacy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  118. Lyn F September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

After experiencing severe heartache in the past 2 years and learning how to hold my head up again, its exciting to hear of a story that can encourage me. I am learning to stop and see the small wonders God has for me, when I look up from my dispair.

  121. Cheryl Lindsay September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved today’s devotional. It’s so easy to get caught up in the crazy things in life but so refreshing when we remember to stop and notice everything that God has created as well as everything he’s doing in our lives. Thanks for the reminder. Thank you to for introducing me to the She Reads website. I didn’t realize it existed!!! I look forward to looking into it further and possibly taking part in it. I very much needed the Proverbs 31 devotion today by Sarah Jio
I needed to be reminded to look for the “beauty in the ashes”. I will put this book on my reading list and when I am able to afford to buy another book “The Violets of March” will definitely be it.

Thank you for the devotion this morning – I needed to be reminded to slow down to see what Christ has for me to see.

  139. Connie September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I really love the idea of you ” choosing a “Christian ” novel written by a Christian but published in the general marketplace – great outreach opportunity to include friends that may not be drawn to a “Christian” novel. Thank you.

  140. Katie September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Always looking for a good, uplifting read. Looking forward to it!

  142. cathee September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This story sounds just like something that I could enjoy and learn from at this time in my life. I love those “God Things”, where the Lord brings something to your attention and the Light-bulb is turned on. This is one of those moments.

  143. C. Vought September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Love wild violets!! Would enjoy the opportunity to read the book.

  144. Regan Normand September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The devotional this morning brings to mind our busy, fast pace of life. Are we truly still chasing after the American Dream? Perhaps it’s right here before our very eyes, in the small things. In the “God things”. Thanks for the reminder to slow down and smell the violets!

  145. Jody September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your devotion this morning reminded me that the journey is more important than the destination. God has so much for us each day . . . than you for your words and your novel. We used to live in Seattle, and just reading your bio and the plot summary brought back sweet memories!

  146. school mom of 2 September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Would love to read this book. Loved the devotion this morning. Everyone needs to be reminded to slow down, pause, to look at what is around them. Thank you!

  147. Molly September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thanks for your devotion today. I drive 20 minutes up I40 to work each day. As I drive up the mountain from the low country below, I am reminded day after day of the beauty of God’s creation. Using that time for prayer and reflection, my time is often filled with worship and praise for the God who created it. I am so glad you reminded us of the many good things God has for us if we would only slow down and see them.

  148. Rhonda September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Monday morning is perfect timing for the wonderful reminder to slow down, be present, and recognize all of God’s beautiful gifts. Thanks for such an encouraging word!

  149. Linda I. September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have yet to be disappointed with the clubs picks. They all have been wonderful reads! And since this book takes place close to where I live, I can’t wait to read it.

  150. Becky September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I always enjoy reading my Proverbs 31 devotionals. I will be sharing exerpts from several at an upcoming ladies’ meeting where I’ll be presenting a session on “Mothering a Prodigal.” Hopefully some of the ladies who attend the session will also subscribe to the daily devotionals as a result! This book sounds like a good read–I’ll enjoy it this fall!

  151. Becky September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just finished reading Sarah Jio’s devotional on Proverbs 31 Ministries. She reminded me that although I have a lot going on, I need to stop and focus on the one who is in control!! (It’s certainly not me) I am looking forward to buying her book too!

  152. Lane N. September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This morning I started a new Christian novel which received rave reviews on Amazon. I am not captivated and look forward to reading Sarah Jio as well as the other club picks. Maybe this reading community has similar tastes to mine. I love quality fiction and am open to secular writers if the, shall we say, offense level is “bearable”….

  153. Jody September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Todays devotional message was a wonderful reminder to look for beauty in the everyday small things we take for granted. I grew up in the northwest and have been away for over 30 years but I love to read stories that take place there as it takes me back home. Thank you for directed me to the “she reads” website!

  154. Janice September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This book sounds wonderful. I would love to read it and have my book club read it also.

  155. Donna September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved your devotion this morning….My soul could feel your tiredness and sense the Peace when you looked upon the violets and saw the Beauty of our LORD and HIS Sweetness in the garden…
I definitely want to read your book….I feel inspired to go to Bainbridge Island in my mind and get away from the cobwebs I feel in my spirit…I am also tired…very tired!!!

  156. Kim Houle September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Great devotional! I am a Florist so I love the focus on Wood Violets! I’m also a Pastor’s wife and mother, etc… The Violets remind me of God’s still small voice in the busy surroundings. I need to be still and read this new book!

  157. Pam Medina September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The Violets of March sounds like a great book. Thanks for introducing me to another new author! Hope I win the giveaway; loved the coffee and chocolates the one time I visited the Northwest.

  158. Tammy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just downloaded the book and can’t wait to read it! She Reads has not disappointed me yet – I’ve been a member for about a year. Wonderful Christian fiction that the average person can relate to. My Kindle is about 2/3 Christian fiction and 1/3 management/leadership development.

Keep up the great work of bring quality fiction to us!

  159. Sel September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Inspirational devotion – “Our problems and schedules pull our eyes from the starry hosts and the One who made them.” was my life last week.My desire is to ALWAYS have my eyes on our Creator and Redeemer but being “task” oriented gets in my way. I have a dear friend who I think will love this book so I want to get it for her. I want to read it also, though I don’t read much fiction. Thank you!

  160. Sandy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just read Sarah’s devotion on Proverbs 31 and there discovered She Reads. What a great start to my day!! Sarah’s devotion was just what I needed as I’m being overwhelmed with a business prospect. And then to find She Reads – how wonderful!! My Mom and I pass books back and forth to each other. I can’t wait to share the site with her! Thanks!

  161. Marylou September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Love the Proverbs 31 devotionals. Can’t wait to start “The Violets of March.”

  162. Deanna September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The Violets of March sounds like a very interesting book that all can relate to. Who of us haven’t made a decision that sounded right or okay at the time only to find that decision has many outcomes that aren’t what we desire. I think to look into someone else’s past (the diary) and learn from their life is a wonderful way of helping people to see what might be going on in their lives and decisions that they are making and how they can impact them indefinitely.
The devotional through Proverbs 31 ministry is a great reminder of how God’s beauty abounds everywhere and that we just need to stop and notice it.

  163. Janelle September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

My life seems like I’m in stormy waters. I find myself busy just trying to keep up with the current and keep my head above water. Sarah’s devotional reminded me that no matter how turbulent my life is, I need to take time to enjoy where I’m at right now. Doing this brings joy and joy brings strength.

  164. Jan September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am so excited to stumble across this website. I love to read and am newly retired. Books are on my agenda!

  165. Doretta September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This was very intriguing. It makes me stop and think about all the things we take for granted even God. Which is always there for us. We need to just take the time and listen and see His wonderful beauty.

  166. Elizabeth September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Online book club is a novel idea. I am ordering the book.

Just order the book and excited to read it. I’ve lived in Washington and I’m excited to read about the experience that Emily has on the island. I love that area and miss the ocean. It can be very healing.

Nice to hear a new author on Proverbs 31 devotional – not that there’s anything wrong with the current gals 🙂 Sounds like a wonderful book. God’s creations ARE amazing – I can’t go out my front door without seeing something breathtaking. I’m also reminded that journaling is important not only for me, but those I leave behind…it will let others know why I was soooo quirky, why I did the things I did. 🙂

  183. kaye September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’m not sure how I got on this site info, but it seems to me for a reason not known yet.

  184. Anna September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved Sarah’s devotional. God truly made a beautiful world for us to enjoy. Also, I loved how Sarah described about God talking to her through a very tiny, simple flower that could’ve been a weed. Isn’t that how God always talks– quietly, through simple things. I hope to read Sarah’s book someday soon.

In 2005, I published a book of short stories which does not talk about Jesus. I love the fact that Sarah’s book which is not published by a Christian publisher and does not talk explicitly about Jesus is featured in She Reads. The Book of Esther does not talk about God at all.

She Reads, thanks for all you do !

    Anna

Just finished reading her devotion on Proverbs 31 website and cannot wait to get the book and read it .

  187. Tammy p September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I wld love to read this book, because although it at have been written as a fictional genre, this preface isn’t life currently. I don’t have an auntie who’s home I could escape to get away from it “all,” life’s reality and a failing marriage, maybe this read could give me some hope. None of which I currently have. And even if I could escape, who would keep my four children. Because I can’t physically escape, reading for me is a great escape from this mind of mine running to and fro.
Blessed even in the middle of all my stress,
    Tammy

What a great concept, to have a great Christian novelist write a novel for the secular market. There are many Christian musicians whose music transcends into the secular music market as well.

This is such a great way to plant the seed of Hope for many who would not go near a “Christian” book.

I can’t wait to read it!

I just finished reading the Proverbs 31 daily devotional by Sarah Jio and was very thankful for the message and reminder to stop and take time to appreciate some of the small things that we take for granted everyday! And to remember that God WILL provide for ALL our needs! I’m also glad there was a link to She Reads and look forward to reading the book!

As my family prepares for my husband’s first military deployment, God’s direction to slow down and enjoy every moment rather than stressing over planning details has been cropping up everywhere! Thank you again for reminding me!

I loved the devotional this morning – such a good reminder to not “lose” God amidst the business of life but to be keenly aware of His handiwork and presence. Our oldest son and family just moved from CA where we are to Seattle so reading this book will help me experience vicariously a little bit of what they are experiencing in the Northwest! Looking forward to it!

I’m always looking for new fiction and am pleased to have stumbled upon this website! What a blessing to have others desiring to enjoy the gift of story telling from a Christ-centered perspective!

  207. susan September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The Violet book looks quite interesting. I have not been reading leisure fiction of late; more of Bible and Bible study books and Christian Classics, but I used to read a lot of fiction. However, my spiritual Mom, my mother in law was named Violet and so this has captured my attention. I am a flower Lover and a redeemed flower child, and I love the premise of finding God’s beauty in unlikely places, but even moreso, looking for God’s beauty everywhere – it is surely all around us but, yes we need to take time out to find it. We have in the last couple of months cut out television in our home as well as facebook and I really do not miss them. I realized I was looking to fb for affirmation rather than God. His words mean much more. Fill the “empty moments” with Him and you will not be disappointed!

I just read Sarah’s devotional from Proverbs 31…and felt a ‘heart connection’ with her…and inspiration to focus on being present in the moment…gratefully enjoying the blessings of God’s creation.
VIOLETS of MARCH sounds like a book I would love to read!!

Winning the gift basket would be a huge blessing!!!

  217. jerikay September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

after reading today’s devotion this excerpt especially spoke to me:
” Weeds often distract us from the things of beauty and joy in our own lives. Our problems and schedules pull our eyes from the starry hosts and the One who made them. In my life, they became a needed reminder to simply be present instead of always pushing ahead to the next task. A reminder to look for God, especially in His creation.”
thank you Sarah for this reminder. i look forward to reading your book!

  218. Melinda September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am very excited to read this book whether I win the contest or not. Thank you so much for introducing me to this author!!

  219. Reba September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The devotional reading today really spoke to me. The past 2 years my life has been a whirlwind, consumed with PA school and the busy life of the city. The devotional today made me realize that I have missed so much of God’s beauty during this time because I’ve been so wrapped up in life and have ignored the simple things. With my upcoming move to somewhere a little more like the slower pace of home, I am excited to start a fresh life, making a point to never be too busy to notice the simple, beautiful things in life.

Looking forward to reading Violets of March!

  220. Laurie B September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This is my first time to comment….I have been touched by the devotionals, but your write up on the book has kindled my interest and I am excited and looking forward to reading the book. Isn’t is amazing how God puts blessings in the midst of turmoil. I am awaiting a biopsy…weeds….and in the midst He introduces hope ….violets.

  226. Lynn Ewing September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can’t wait to read this book. It is so hard to find books that are thoughtful and inspiring. It is especially hard to find good Christian fiction at my local library.

Thank you for the reminder to slow down and enjoy the beauty God created. Just yesterday the sky was pink with sunset and a rainbow was sneaking through. I wanted to take a picture, but have to rely on my head camera. God gives us so many amazing sights. I’m also excited how He led me to your site. The book sounds wonderful and I can’t wait to read it.

I really needed to be reminded to focus on God’s miracles all around us. He blesses us with these reminders of His love and His care for us and His sovereignty every day. Yet, when we are focused on the problems and business of life…we miss them completely.

  231. Jimena September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved your devotion today. It made me think how many things God has tried to show me during these past two difficult years of my life but I was too busy looking at the circumstances.

  238. Terri September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I too just noticed a patch of violets in the midst of weeds during a power walk. Then I slowed down because the true power walk I need is to be one with God and enjoys his precious gifts that surround me yet so easy to overlook in a busy world. Once your eyes are open you see it all, speckled butterflies hovering upon the stones under a neighbor ‘s mailbox to the distinctive call of the Cardinal hiding in a pine tree. The field of yellow seen from my front porch turns out to be thousands of wild mini sunflowers leaving me to hope the owner doesn’t mow them down anytime soon. Thank you Lord for catching my attention!

  239. Laura in Texas September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’m really pleased to see that you’re including books written by Christians but published in the general market. It’s important for us to engage the world in intelligent discussion, since we can’t influence them if we never interact with them — as someone has said, salt that stays in the saltshaker doesn’t add any flavor to food (paraphrasing).

Thanks for your good work here.

    Sarah,
What a great reminder to slow down and enjoy creation! With a list a mile long before school starts this week, I was washing off my son’s muddy sandals in the front yard and noticed new roses on the bush! I literally “stopped to smell the roses”, they are amazing and have such a heady fragrance. Then I went in to check my email, and here you were! A coincidence, I think not! The book sounds amazing.

Your post today is a blessing. I do need to take a moment and enjoy the beauty that God is surrounding me with. I’m so focused on finishing my tasks, and in getting things done. I have been wanting to read this book for so long. I love the theme of “Violets of March”. The basket sounds wonderful, especially in times like these when there is no money for little things that soothe. This book sounds like it has it all, history, mystery, love and a certain bittersweetness.

Sarah Jio has written a very sensitive and heart-felt book that I know will touch many and bring joy and hope to many women who have loved and lost. I am one of those who would enjoy reading this book to find some inspiration and hope through her writing. May the Lord continue to use Sarah in her writing to bring women sound solutions to finding the essence of life in Christ.

Always looking for new books to read! This story sounds amazing – I LOVE Bainbridge Island – so beautiful. The past 5 years have taught me to stop and enjoy the “simple” things in life. My personal life to an unexpected turn with a 3rd pregnancy that blessed us with identical twin boys that came with autism. This journey has caused us to slow down and re-evaluate what is truly important. Faith, family & friends top the list. Can’t wait to read this story – thanks for sharing.

I did not know anything about The Violets of March before obtaining the book on CD’s from my library. I did not even read the synopsis or watch the trailer. I only picked it up because y’all recommended it, and She Reads has not let me down yet!

Already, I have made it through the first two chapters of this book in one night; and, I am hooked!

I can hardly wait for Wednesday–to begin the discussion of this incredible, intriguing novel! I say incredible because it is rare that I get this excited about fiction (of all things) within the first two chapters.

    Thank You She Reads!

  310. Amy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

    Dear Sarah,

Your Proverbs 31 devotional sounds like my life. With weeds so high in my garden this summer that my almost 5 year old could stand straight up and not be seen! Three kids under 5: one starting kindergarten, one teething, and one two-year-olding… starting work teaching full time to 18 junior high kids who will all be living the life of junior high kids- tumoultuous at times to say the least… house to clean…husband to love… so much to do and yet hearing that still small voice telling me to stop and feel these moments, memorize them, breathe them, live them. They go too quickly. Thanks for the reminder to pause and enjoy. It is very timely.
Blessings in all of your amazing endeavours,
    Amy

  311. Cheryl September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Would love to win and read the book. We all need to take time to enjoy creation on a daily basis, not wait til tragedy strikes or life derails us.

  312. Bunny September 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am one who is always looking for unexpected treasures in the weeds, so this touched my heart. Looking forward to reading this book. Sarah could become my new favorite author.

I am one of those stopping by for the first time after reading Sarah Jio’s devotion at Proverbs 31 Ministries. I was further interested, especially since I live in Bonney Lake, not far from Seattle; and love to read Christian fiction, to click on She reads.

  317. Susan September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

    Looks like an interesting book.

  318. Brenda Welc September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

How inspiring! I too have learned to discover the small things in life which mean so much. Recently we had a young man drown near our home and when I received the phone call, I was sitting with my son in an Arby’s restaurant. After hanging up the phone with my daughter I began to pray. As I turned my gaze I noticed a reflection in the mirror in the lobby. I could only see part of the window sill, but what I could see reflected in the mirror was a cross. In that instant I knew God was in control and whatever happened, He would turn for good. I know am looking for the crosses in my life which I have missed along the way. I pray God will increase you as you increase Him in your life. Be Blessed!

  319. Lori September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I am excited about reading her book. It will be interesting to see how the Christian aspect is represented in a book that is not published strictly by a Christian publisher.

  320. Jessica Budd September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I am intrigued!!!! I have added this to my list of “to reads”. Thanks for another suggestion.

  321. rachelle September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I love the Proverbs 31 Ministry devotions. I try and get them into me at the start of every day. I love reading and I love God. So its not a hard task. Every single time God reminds me about something in my life. The story about the violets also reminds me of what God sees in people. Often we see the weeds, the things we don’t like about people. It takes a special eye and heart to spot the violets. It took me a long time to discover my own violets in my life. So grateful to a big God who loves us, weeds and all. As a mama of three sons living with a back injury and constant pain, I love hearing His voice. It keeps me sane. God is awesome.

  322. Glenna Smith September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

The book sounds absolutely wonderful, and I can hardly wait to read it! Thanks Sarah!

  325. Pamela Honeycutt September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I desparately needed the devotion Beauty in Unlikely Places. My husband has been out of work this year and is suffering from depression. I have tried to muster up the strength to carry the load, working two jobs 70- 80 hours a week. I have become so consumed with our problems that I doubted any beauty remains among the thorns. I know God is giving me strength and is calling me to a higher level

  326. phyllis September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I will definitely read this and consider it for one of my two book clubs. Sounds like one they might also enjoy.

  336. Shannon September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I’m excited that you guys picked a book that is not necessarily Christian fiction because in the mainstream media, most of what we read and see on TV is not Christian-based. It’s good to have something mainstream that’s still worthwhile and relays a good message.

  337. Stella September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

The Proverbs 31 devotional brought me here. I have written, as a Christian, a childrens book for the secular market. And I ask myself, “Why” . Violets of March, is an encouragement to me. Also, I have been toying with the idea to write about my great grandmother who although was Greek, fled the Armenian genocide. So the subject of Violets of March is drawing me in. The thought of curling up with a novel like Violets of March is heartwarming. How wonderful that these little wood violets inspired Sarah-an encouragement for us all.

  338. Kelly September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Just found this site. Can’t wait to read the book.

  339. Joanna September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

  341. M.K. September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

It is amazing how there usually is a message that resonates with me whenever I read the P31 devos. Today I needed the encouragement to see the violets in an adult son’s life with whom I was deeply frustrated with. Thanks, M

  342. Chelsea Leger September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

What a wonderful website! This is such a great resource for those who wish to read quality fiction without all the filth. And well done She Reads for picking a novel that came through a mainstream publisher, I can’t wait to read Sarah Jio’s works.

  351. Betsy September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I, too, just last week began reading the devotions from Proverbs 31. I have been personally touched by each one. Yes, too often the devil tricks us by helping us become too busy. My pastor has challenged our church family to read through the New Testament between 9/1/11 and 12/31/11 which I have committed to do but I think I can still read this book. Sounds so intriguing!!

  352. Carla LeNoir September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Having been raised partially by my grandmother, I am eager to read this new selection. Thank you for bringing our attention to new and different books.

  360. Brenda Lamers September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I love to read and it can be hard to find well written Christian literature–this looks like it will fill the need

  361. Beth Maas September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

The violets remind me of “weeds” that grew on the north side of my childhood home. The lily of the valleys multiplied rapidly and took over whatever else was planted. But the fragrance and the delicacy of the little flowers more than made up for their nuisance factor. I remember one of my grandmother’s favorite perfumed powders was also lily of the valley. The flowers always brought back fond memories of my grandmother and the way she allowed me to “experiment” with her perfumes and jewelry. And of course, being the music girl that I am, the words of the song come to mind, too. “He is the lily of the valley, he’s the bright and morning star.” Amazing that a little flower can conjour up so many positive and encouraging thoughts. God is so good!

  362. Stephanie Westerfield September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

This is my first visit to She Reads and I am looking forward to all the wonderful information that is available to us. Being an empty nester now, and having a great love to read, I am looking forward to reading her book. From what trailer says about the book, it looks like a story that illustrates that we are made better people when we go through rough storms. Diamonds are not made in glass houses but with pressure and heat. I look forward to reading this book and joining the reading club as something to do with my time now that my son’s have moved on to pursue their adult lives.

  366. Christine September 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I feel very blessed to have found both Proverbs 31 Ministries and She Reads! I cannot wait to begin reading The Violets of March, it’s always exciting to discover a new-to-me talented author. Being part of an on-line Reading Group sounded like the perfect way to enrich the fall and winter months to come. 429. Kara September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have been inspired by Proverbs31 ministries for over a year now… Thank you! But I am just now coming around to She Reads. I am a mommy of two little girls, with a great love for reading but never seem to have time to read books for me (other than the Bible). I want to make more time, and that probably means less brainless/relaxing time in front of the tv 😉 I look forward to reading The Violets of March! Thank you for your ministry!

  430. Karen Spurlock September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This is my first visit to She Reads, having learned of it through Christianity.com’s Encouragement for Today. I read Sarah Jio’s devotional and turned to She Reads to find out more about Sarah and her book “The Violets of March.” I am excited to visit again and to read this book!

I am looking forward to this novel – how exciting for a book from a Christian author to be released to a wider audience. I pray this book is read and pondered by the precise seeker who is hesitant to step inside a Christian bookstore.

I can’t wait to reach this book, it sounds like exactly where my life is right now. Now I just need find the money and get to a book store. I’m also glad you are acknowledging christian faithed author in the secular publishing world. We all need more acknowledgement in this secular world and to be reminded that we are not alone.

  440. April September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Sounds like an intriguing read. Liked hearing how the author’s neighbor brought the violets to her attention and how they were incorporated into her writing. Like the story behind the story. God amazes me the way he can take something right in our back yard that we so easily overlook and enlarge it and use it for his glory. Beautiful give away.

  441. Denise Castano September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

wow! how often I miss the beauty the Lord has for me every day bc I am too busy keeping up and running from one thing to the next! That is not how He intended my life to be! I am excited to start a book club – we will have family reading time now that my kids are older and this will encourage them to look forward to reading, too!

  442. Pauline Knight September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Going to look for a copy of this book today. Sounds like something someone very close to me needs to read.

  444. Eve Arrington September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I came across this site through reading the devotion through Proverbs 31 Ministry. I so needed this devotion today. I was just telling a friend of mine last night that I used to love reading, actually still do. But I let life get in the way and I barely have time to do anything that involves just me with 3 girls and a husband. It seems as if God is pusing me in that direction to get back to my first love of reading. I have gotten invited to several book clubs and even to read a well known novel the last 40 days of the year to focus on the purpose of life. So again I am thankful for this read this morning and thanks for offering such a warm giveaway!

  445. Cyndi Freeman September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Sounds very interesting, can’t wait to read this book.

  446. nita September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can’t wait to share this book with my daughter. My daughter graduated college with an English Major and her dream is to write. Being a Christian she is struggling with what to write. Her love is fiction and she reads many books; both Christian and Non Christian. My daughter’s goal is to share Christ through her writing and it is encouraging to know that P31 supports both Christian novels and novels written by Christians. I think this will give her encouragment that she will be able to share Christ no matter which route she takes. thank you

  447. Donna M September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  498. Deb September 6, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I would really love to read this book. Violets have always been a favorite flower of mine. I always notice them and admire them. I mostly let them bloom where they are planted. I never treat them as weeds. Sometimes I’ve tried to put them all together in a little garden, but they always know where they are supposed to be and where they will thrive the best. I’ve learned to just let them be and love them where they are. So, I can’t wait to read this book and discover how the violets are woven into the story.

I also emailed Sarah Jio about how much I enjoyed the book, and where it was set. I’ve always wanted to visit Bainbridge Island! Her response both prompt and personable. I highly recommend this book!

  510. Denise H September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

The devotional was a great reminder to take time to enjoy the blessings of life given by a loving God. Sometimes almost unnoticeable. If we take a moment we can find beauty in unexpected places. Thank you for the reminder. The book looks great. It sounds like something I would enjoy reading. I haven’t taken time to read a good book that isn’t a child’s book in quite a while… you know, kids, homeschool, work… very busy. I look forward to reading “The Violets of March.”

First you had my eyes, then the artist in me, and then my heart and mind… The front cover of the book caught my eye (great photo!)… then the beautiful little purple flowers spoke to my love of color (purple=my fave!)… and then to watch the clip and see/hear what the story is about–well, that took my breath away!! I was instantly pulled into the power of this woman’s story–her life has pieces of my story in it! Must read–asap!!! Thanks to “She Reads” and “Proverbs 31” for the opportunity to learn about wonderful books and find great new authors to read!

  522. Sherry September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I posted this comment on an earlier blog, oops! but it is worth repeating to me. I enjoyed reading The Violets of March and I have finished the book already. Once I started I could not put it down. I took it to work on my iphone even and read it during quiet moments. Reading this book was a complete pleasure and I will be reading the next one due out in December. This was a wonderful first experience bieing in a book club.

  523. Deana Fuchs September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I’ve been to the She Reads! site many times and love the great suggestions you all have! After reading Sarah’s devotional today on Proverbs 31 – I can’t wait to get this book! Thanks!

  524. Charlene Hutchens September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

This is my first time to your site, I just came back from vacation
in Seattle. Loved it there. Would move if I could. I wish I had “Violets In March” to read while I was on the plane. First timer with the on-line book club. The subject matter and
the period of history caught my eye. Looking forward to reading new genre of
    fiction Christian literature.

  525. Lisa September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Can’t wait to read this book!! Thanks for telling about it!!

  526. Claire September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Loved this book! Couldn’t wait to read and then didn’t want to put it down. I was sad to finish, but thought the ending was fabulous.

  527. Jackie September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I so want to win that gift basket for a dear sweet friend who just lost everything in a wild fire today. Her entire home, belongings, special things….all gone. All they got out with was a few belongings and their family. She had such a sweet spirit when I spoke to her today….she said, “God will take care of us”. She is right….even in our devastation. Her name is Tammy and I would love to give her this book.

  528. Donna September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I’ve been looking for a fiction book that has a Christian “bent” to it to give to a non-Christian friend of mine. This is it! Can’t wait to get it and give it to her…

  529. Jill September 6, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I really enjoyed Sarah’s devotional on P31 today and followed the link to this page. I love to read fiction, love stories and mysteries. It sounds like this book contains all three! I’ve never been in a book club before but I’m looking forward to joining this one. I’m excited to get this book and to begin a new love for a new author!

  540. Jacquie September 7, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This is my first time to go to this page. Going to a bookstore and trying to find a book when you don’t know anything about the author or the content of the book is not one of my favorite things to do. It is nice to have a place to “check out” both the author and the book before heading to the store. I really enjoyed the author’s devotional today!

  541. Mary Jean O'Neil September 7, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This is my first time on this site. I find it very inspiring to read everyone’s thoughts and comments.

I am a retired librarian. And this is a brand new author to me. I will indeed look for a copy of this book.

I have a long list of favorite inspirational authors. And I will indeed add Sarah Jio to my list.

    Thank you

I am so thrilled to learn about this site!!! I was a member of a bookclub but my work schedule changed and I can no longer attend. I tend to get into a rut of reading the same types of books and the same authors if I’m not challenged. So thank you for letting me be a part of this. I downloaded the book for audible.com on Saturday and stayed up until 3AM this morning finishing it. What a wonderful story! Very well written. It gripped me from the beginning and kept me riveted until the very end. I look forward to next month’s selection. Wow, a whole month away….can you give me another suggestion to keep me going until then?

  556. Erika September 7, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

  560. MIKELL fUHRMANN September 8, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This vision of spring violets is very real to me. In the Tampa area we seldom find them but they were plentiful where I grew up. As I work every day with women in a crisis pregnancy with the insinuation of abortion around us I love finding the “violets”. The person in front of me who has so many things in her life that would or could make almost anyone think about that quick solution to her dilemma, a untimely baby, smiles at me after telling me a heart wringing picture of her life, and says she knows God wants her to have this baby. She is my great and shinning star or violet.

  561. Caitlin Vansteel September 8, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just stumbled upon this site and am so excited to go get my book and begin to read along. What a blessing this is going to be for me. I was just telling my husband that I needed something for me, something to look forward to and what better than an online book club. I have twin three year olds, work full time as a teacher and a full time student working on my Masters… online is the only way I can do anything right now. 🙂

  586. Catjmat September 9, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I finished this book in a day I could not set it down. This book came to me at a very difficult time
In my life. I have filed for divorce after several years of asking my husband to stop drinking. He choose not to shortly after filing he entered into a treatment facility of 35 days. He tells me that he will do whatever it takes to save our marriage. I found the hope and love I needed in this Novel to open my heart and be willing to give our love another chance. This story added the warmth I needed at a very hard time for me.

  587. Cheryl September 9, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  589. Sherrey September 9, 2011 at 10:17 am #

So glad to find a new book set practically (well, in the next state at least) in my own backyard. I live in Portland, OR, and the area around Bainbridge is one of our favorite haunts. And the connection of the wood violets and redemption is beautiful. Can’t wait to read your book and others. I’ve just discovered She Reads, and look forward to many more good books for my shelves.

  590. Janna September 9, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I really liked this book a lot. It was well written and kept me coming back to find out who the characters were in the diary. Also I wanted to find out what kind of choice the main character would make. I recommended it to all my Facebook friends. One of the best reads of the summer in my opinion. I would love to win that basket. We live in Oregon so now I want to make a trip to the island. I’ve only ever ridden the fairy over for an excursion from Seattle.

  591. deb September 9, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Thanks to Penguin, Ms. Jio, and She Reads for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway! Each book that I have read from She Reads has been, in its own way, wonderful! I expect nothing less from VIOLETS OF MARCH!

  610. JulieS September 12, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am so thankful for Christian authors who keep us entertained and inspired. The secular books I see are often filled with material that does not honor God and I think it’s wonderful to have other choices.

  611. Melissa Pierce September 12, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I love reading the Proverbs 31 Ministries devotional everyday. I am a stay at home and also teach preschool in my home. Some days I feel down and out with running kids and husband to the Dr’s appointments, school with the kids, trying to stay on top of things and just everyday life. Reading Proverbs 31 gives me the uplifting I need for the day. Thank you!

  612. Debra September 12, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

The Violets of March concept caught my eye upon reading the Proverbs 31 devotional today-How often I miss the Lord’s beauty in the little things while chaseing the big things when all life is about is the little things. I seek more little these days and less of the big. Anxious to read the novel and find out how Emily handles them.

I cannot tell you how much I cannot wait to read this book. As a full-time wife, MS state employee, student, and a future educator, I definitely prize the reading time that I set aside for myself. This is one of those books that I could seat down and read in one sitting! I love stories about authors because I want to write a book myself! You are such an inspiration to me Sarah because you manage to write amidst all of the things on your plate. I love that! I am runner myself and love that time to myself in the morning to think and pray! I’m new to the She Reads part of Proverbs 31, but this wonderful group of women have changed my marriage, my life, and my future! Thank you for all that you do to encourage so many women and for following God’s will!

I recently discovered Proverbs 31 as a result of a bible study, and felt blessed for it … and now THIS!!! I LOVE to read, and even more I love to read Christian fiction! Can’t wait to read old posts on this site with the hopes of adding to my library.

I just finished “The Violets of March” tonight. I am blind, but was able to get it from IBooks so read it on the phone. It was haunting, and in some ways that book reminded me of “Bridges of Madison County”, in its mystery sort of melancholy. I hated it to end. I sort of hoped that Emily would meet Esther, but I had the feeling that her writing definitely was a success afterwards and that she and Jack both learned from the past and it made their presence richer. Hope to read more of Sarah’s book, and I hope to read additional books in the book club; couldn’t find if there was an additional place to actually post on the book or how to do so.

. . . think I’ll enjoy reading this book. Sounds like a touching, poignant story and great plot for a film. Though everyone’s heartaches, pains, and poor choices differ, we can recognize ourselves in the characters and their actions.

I look forward to reading “The Violets of March” and becoming a part of this online book club. I’ll take special interest in Sarah Jio’s book since two of my three children live in the greater Seattle area. Books that reveal secrets from the past fascinate me!
