September Book Club Selection

September catches me by surprise every year. It’s as though one minute I’m splashing with my kids in the pool and the next I’m standing in the aisle at Target looking at a half-empty shelf of school supplies. It comes so quickly and I’m never quite ready for it. And even though it still feels like summer in my part of the country (temperatures were over one hundred degrees today) my mood shifts toward fall. I think of falling leaves and sweaters and finally being able to wear jeans again. I think of curling up on the couch with my pumpkin-spice coffee and reading. Which of course brings us to this month’s book club selection: THE MERYL STREEP MOVIE CLUB.

Like many people I grew up watching Meryl Streep. She embodies everything that is good about Hollywood and everything that is noble about storytelling. I was young (probably too young, actually) when I first saw Sophie’s Choice. And though I’ve watched Meryl in countless movies since, that is how I still see her in my mind. Beautiful and tragic and compelling. I can’t think of an actress I’d like to meet more. Thus my instant curiosity when I first heard about Mia March’s debut novel.

Mia’s publisher, Gallery Books, has kindly provided our prizes this month. The first is a tote bag filled with novels, including THE MERYL STREEP MOVIE CLUB, and a DVD of Out of Africa (Mia’s favorite Meryl Streep movie) to one person who leaves a comment on this post.  (Perhaps tell us your favorite Meryl Streep Movie?) And a second tote bag filled with novels, also including THE MERYL STREEP MOVIE CLUB to one participant of our online book club. It’s free to join and there is no long term commitment. Every comment you leave on the forum will count as another entry to win. I hope to see you there as I’ll be leading the discussion again this month.

A bit more about the novel…

In the bestselling tradition of  The Friday Night Knitting Club  and  The Jane Austen Book Club,  three women find unexpected answers, happiness, and their way back to one another, with Meryl Streep movies as their inspiration.

Two sisters and the cousin they grew up with after a tragedy are summoned home to their family matriarch’s inn on the coast of Maine for a shocking announcement. Suddenly, Isabel, June, and Kat are sharing the attic bedroom—and barely speaking. But when innkeeper Lolly asks them to join her and the guests in the parlor for weekly Movie Night—it’s Meryl Streep month—they find themselves sharing secrets, talking long into the night—and questioning everything they thought they knew about life, love, and one another.

Each woman sees her complicated life reflected through the magic of cinema: Isabel’s husband is having an affair, and an old pact may keep her from what she wants most . . . June has promised her seven-year-old son that she will somehow find his father, who he’s never met . . . and Kat is ambivalent about accepting her lifelong best friend’s marriage proposal. Through everything, Lolly has always been there for them, and now Isabel, June, Kat—and Meryl—must be there for her. Finding themselves. Finding each other. Finding a happy ending.

Just requested from the local library – can’t wait to read. Just saw Meryl Streep’s latest movie “Hope Springs” with my hubby – absolutely hilarious! However “Bridges of Madison County” continues to be my all-time fave Streep movie

Hmmmm, my favourite Meryl Streep movie? so many to choose from! I think it has to be Bridges of Madison County,in which she captured the frustration of being an under appreciated and taken for granted wife, longing for romance and love, but still chose to ‘do the right thing’despite her dalliance with the exciting stranger in town……
    Great movie !

I will read this book whether I win or not. My favorite movie is “The Iron Lady”. She embodies what an actress should be.

  4. Cindylouray September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I don’t go to many movies, but I saw “Out of Africa” and I loved it. I’ve read “Bridges of Madison County” since it is set near here, but not seen it. This looks like a book well worth reading, and I plan to do so. Just got an accessible copy.

Being a “foodie,” I really enjoyed the movie “Julie and Julia”. I know it’s probably not Meryl’s greatest acting job, but it was fun!

Can’t wait to share my review — so far am enjoying this one — my mother is a huuuge Meryl fan so I feel a bit like this novel could be *my* life! :)

Meryl Streep has been such a strong actress over the years playing such intriguing roles but very real life ones at that. I have several I really enjoyed. I started talking with a British accent after Julia and Julia, outbid Africa made me dream to go there and my daughter has been twice now, the bridges if Madison county, do many women in our country could relate to and most of all her recent one called hope springs. Wow that can encourage a lot if men and/or women to hang in there. Hope does resonate and it can bring change in our lives.

Would love to read this book and get your free gift that you have carefully selected and put together to encourage one if us! Thank you!

List my favorite movie …. wow…Kramer vs Kramer to Silkwood to Riverwild to Julie and Julia… so many good movies for her!!!

Too many to choose from. I did love her in Julie and Julia, but she was also good in the Iron Lady.

  11. Jayne D. September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I also love Meryl Streep and Out of Africa is one of my favorite movies. I think this book sound wonderful and can’t wait to start reading it.
    Thanks

Everything about Meryl Streep brings out the best in me!
Her ability to be herself in every movie while also totally getting into the character in every movie is what I love best about her. “Hope Springs” was a perfect example of her being able to take on a difficult subject and make us all relate to it in our own way.

Can’t wait to read the book. Life is better with Meryl Streep in it and you can’t say that about many people in her profession these days. She inspires us to do our best.

  13. cammih September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Looking forward to starting this book! Sounds intriguing! :)

Meryl, Forever!! Out of Africa, Always!

  15. Carla September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

You had me at hello….I mean, you had me at “Meryl”! Can’t wait to read this book and I feel a Meryl-movie-thon coming on…

“Out of Africa” is *our* movie (me & the hub’s)…it’s our story, we quote lines almost daily and I walked down the aisle to him with John Barry’s theme from Out of Africa playing… ….might have to go watch it again now.

  16. Anne B. September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I love Meryl Steep! Some of my favorite Meryl movies are Julie and Julia, Mama Mia, and The River Wild.

  17. Julia Reffner September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Sounds like a fun read. I think Julie and Julia is my favorite recent role but its a hard choice.

  18. Melinda K Taylor September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

    Amen to that!!!

  19. iola September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I love “It’s Complicated” and “House of Spirits” oh and I thought she did amazing at being Julia Childs in Julie and Julia.

  20. Paula Dolin September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Sounds like a good book! One of my favorite Meryl Streep movies is Julie & Julia, but she’s fabulous in them all.

  21. Tania Banus September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Well, first of all I have to say that I’m also a huge Meryl Streep fan. I had a crush on her when I saw Mamma Mia!(I’m 13 now, and I didin’t know about her since I saw this movie) and since then I admire her a lot. My favourite Meryl Streep movie? That’s really really hard for me, I can’t choose one…
But Out of Africa is really a great one, and her interpretation is AMAZING! Also I love Meryl, not only for her incredible talent, but for her kindness and humility<3 I think she's one of the best persons in the whole world, and for me, she's my biggest inspiration!

  22. Karola September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Is never easy to choose who’s your fave Meryl Streep’s movie, quote, speech. She’s really the Greatest actress of our times and she’s one of a kind.
I’ve grown up with her movies and I love every one of them for a different reason.
She’s amazing in The Brides of Madison County, in Out of Africa, in The Iron Lady, in One True thing, Julie & Julia and all the movies she’s done.
But a Meryl Streep movie that I watch a lot and that is special to me is Mamma Mia.
That movie is pure joy. Is one of the only things that cheers me up and makes me happy when I watch it.
The location, the story, the cast, the Abba songs and Meryl <3 It's a movie composed of lots of great things.
That movie is magical and Meryl Streep AMAZING. She shows us that she really can do anything :)
She should've won an Oscar just for The Winner takes it all.
Mamma mia is about love and friendship and the great Abba songs wich I've likes since I was little:D
Mamma mia is not just my fave Meryl Streep movie but it's my fave movie!
Now I'd love to read The Meryl Streep movie club:) Sure it's going to be my fave book:D

  23. joanna September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I absolutely love Meryl Streep and adore all her movies, they are all amazing!

  24. Pauline September 4, 2012 at 10:17 am #

“Out of Africa” is my favorite Meryl Streep movie–probably due to my strong desire to go to Kenya. The most recent film of hers I’ve seen is “Hope Springs,” a wonderful tale of romantic love renewed in a marriage.

  25. Julia Munroe Martin September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

It’s so hard to pick just one of Meryl’s movies — but one I saw recently (and loved) was “Prime.” I also loved “Julie and Julia” and to go way back in her career, was overwhelmed by both “The Deerhunter” and “Sophie’s Choice.” In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one of her movies I haven’t flat-out loved.

  26. Myra September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

This is a difficult decision…Meryl Streep was in soooo many great movies. She is a wonderfully talented actress. I loved “Bridges of Madison County”, but I have to give mention to “Julie and Julia”. She did such a terrific job of portraying Julia Childs. I wanted to go see her new movie, “Hope Springs”, but it hasn’t appeared in our area.

  27. Katie September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I’ve wanted to read this book for awhile now, being a huge fan of Meryl and all. As far as my favorite movie of hers goes, I would have to say The Bridges of Madison County. The way she crafted Francesca Johnson was just amazing. I believed every line she said and every move she made. Pure talent. Meryl is definitely a big inspiration.

  28. Kris C September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I love Meryl; my favorites are “Out of Africa”, “Silkwood”, and “Julie & Julia”. :)

  29. Shannon Brown September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I just recently saw the movie Hope Springs, and I think it was my favorite Meryl Streep movie. I laughed and cried. It was the best date that my Hubby and I have had together in a long while. I think this book will be wonderful, can not wait to read it!! Shannon

I believe this is a perfect choice of a book for this month’s She Reads. It is turning alittle Fallish, and we each want to curl up with a hot cup of our favorite beverage – mine is Hot Tea, the true English way, and a good book…maybe even a fire in some locations, but, sadly too early for my address. I read 3-4 books a month, and many of the latest on the Market. So it will be my delight to read this one. My favoiete movie with Meryl is the one where she is a music teacher in a school…sorry, can’t remember the title! But if you saw it, you will remember it. Movies that you only see once and remember forever are the best kind of movies. I think she is one very talented woman, and a role model for many, yes, very many! Here’s a big wish to her, to you, and to all who love to read!!

  32. Susan Coster September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Meryl Streep is such a treasure from Sophie’s Choice, Out of Africa, Julie & Julia…..but her best by far is THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. It was beyond moving…..

  33. Linda F. September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I love to curl up with a good book when I get a chance-which is rare in my world of little ones & a very busy schedule. However, sometimes at night I have a few free moments & this is my time to curl up after the days work & busyness is done & spend time with my hubby; each of us reading on the couch while holding hands:) good times, good memories & this book sounds like a good one to add to my collection:)

  34. Tamara September 4, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

The Devil Wears Prada and It’s Complicated are my two fav Meryl movies.

Mia March- I cannot say enough good things about this book. It’s fantastic.

  35. Becky S September 5, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Loved Devil Wears Prada and Julie & Julia.

  36. Kathy September 5, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I was fascinated by Meryl in “Julie and Julia” as the irrepressible Julia Childs. Also I think her most dramatic role was in “Out of Africa.” I’m sure this book will be full of great scenes from her career. Looking forward to reading this book.

  37. Tammi T. September 5, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

The title sounds very intriguing and I hope to read it soon. I haven’t seen a lot of the movies most would consider “classic Meryl Streep. I guess the most recent ones I’ve watched were “Julie and Julia” and “Momma Mia”. I do have “Hope Springs” in my Netflix DVD queue. Maybe this book will inspire me to watch some more of them.

  38. Katherine Jones September 6, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Always love knowing the story behind the story. And how does one pick a favorite Meryl movie? So many to choose from, but Sophie’s Choice and Death Becomes Her are at the top of my list.

  39. AnnieB September 6, 2012 at 10:17 am #

My favorite, by a nose, is Mama Mia because she was so amazing in a part that, at first, didn’t seem to fit her. I am so impressed with her range.

  40. Nicole September 6, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I loved Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia because I love the whole soundtrack! Belive it or not, I haven’t seen Out of Africa, so I’d love to win it!

  41. Teresa Ahrenholtz September 6, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Out of Africa is my favorite Meryl Streep movie and on my list of top 5 favorite movies of all.

Julie and Julia — loved it! She was wonderful, as was everyone else in the movie.

  51. Marilyn Slagel September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

How can I choose a favorite, when I would choose them all? Okay, I guess it would be Bridges, but I’ve also watched Dalmations a gazillion times with the little ones. Hope Springs is on my list for next week, just hope I can squeeze in a trip to the show. Then there is Julia – an amazing role for Meryl!

  52. Susan C. September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I never saw Sophie’s Choice so I will have to agree and say The Bridges of Madison County with Clint Eastwood has to be my very favorite, both novel and movie.

  53. Jencey Gortney September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

This looks like a great book! I have heard a lot of good things about the author.

  54. Hope S September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

What a fabulous idea for a book! I love Meryl Streep. How to pick a favorite movie of hers, though. That’s really hard. Sophie’s Choice and The Hours still haunt me with her incredible characters. But she has such a fun side, too: Mama Mia, The Devil Wears Prada, Julie/Julia. How to pick? I guess The Bridges of Madison County, but I’d probably give you a different answer tomorrow.

  55. Jill D. September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

This book sounds very intriguing and also the next one…Finding Colin Firth! I’d love to win a copy.

  56. Tracy September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Love Out of Africa and went to the farm a few years ago!

  57. Colleen S September 7, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Fell in love with Meryl in Sophie’s Choice, but also loved Kramer vs. Kramer. It was also great to laugh with her in It’s Complicated. Too many I haven’t seen as well.

  58. Carol September 8, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Have always loved Meryl Streep. She is one of the most diverse actresses in Hollywood. Liked the scene in The Devil Wears Prada where she has no make-up on, gray hair and is in her bathrobe.

  59. Linda Allen September 8, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Hard to choose a favorite Meryl Streep movie. She is such a great actress. Mia’s book sounds like a winner.
Thanks for this opportunity to win the book along with many more.

  60. Lisa September 8, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Thanks for the giveaways! Would love to win a copy.

  61. Lili Nicole September 8, 2012 at 10:17 am #

This mother of three sweet daughters definately has to choose Mama Mia as the favorite movie. I do adore Meryl in all of her movies! Seeing her tender yet strong heart in Mama Mia has blessed me as I wander through the beauty of Mother/Daughter Heaven.

  62. Carol September 8, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

My favorite Meryl Streep movie is “The Devil Wears Prada”. Love how diverse an actress she is.

  63. Bonnie Grove September 8, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Did anyone say Prairie Home Companion? Goodness I love that movie. When Meryl Streep sings Softly and Tenderly in the dressing room–wow.
(If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Garrison Kellior, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Lilly Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones. It’s the final airing of The Prairie Home Companion before a big company takes over the station. Wonderful!)

  64. Michele September 9, 2012 at 10:17 am #

I have not seen all of Meryl Streep’s movies but she is certainly a very versatile actress. I would welcome receiving the gift tote with books and movies.

  65. Kathleen September 9, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Love Meryl Streep! The book sounds great!

  66. Cindylouray September 9, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

After reading the book, I want to look into more of these movies. Don’t want to say more because I don’t know what happened to my last post.

  67. Jess September 9, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Love how Meryl just takes on each new character and transforms into them.

  68. Lili Nicole September 9, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Oh, I want to see the movies too! And, I would love to see them with my daughters. This book is inspiring me with hopes to connect in new ways with women in my family and, really, all women.

  69. Michele September 9, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

I would have to say Bridges would be my favorite with her in it. Prada and Kramer are 2nd and 3rd respectively. She is what I call a timeless actress, not many in the entertainment field can and will be remembered. Thanks so much for all the leads to new books!

  70. Teresa September 10, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Loved Prada! Loved the Dalmations as well–she was the best!

  71. Carol September 10, 2012 at 10:17 am #

  72. Jean H September 10, 2012 at 10:17 am #

From Devil Wears Prada to Dalmations to Out of Africa and Hope Springs… Meryl’s talent and versatility keeps her in the limelight and in our hearts!

  73. Wanda September 10, 2012 at 10:17 am #

Who doesn’t love Meryl Streep? I also love reading first novels so sounds like this one is for me. Can’t wait to read it and discuss it with like minds.

  74. Kelly Wilie September 10, 2012 at 10:17 am #

My would definately be Bridges Over Madison County! I loved it so much I traveled from Birmingham, Al to Iowa to take the tour of where the movie was shot, and walked over the bridge where a lot of the scenes were. It was a trip I’ll never forget!

  75. Lili Nicole September 10, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Kelly, I would really like to take that trip to Iowa. Maybe my daughters and I will one day! Thanks for the idea and inspiration!

  76. Andea September 11, 2012 at 10:17 am #

“It’s Complicated” is my favorite Meryl Streep movie! Real life, real comedy. I can hardly wait to read the “Meryl Streep Movie Club”!!

  77. Cindy Jorgensen September 11, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Truthfully, only because I recently rewatched it on TV, my favorite Meryl Streep movie as of this day is Julie and Julia (or is it Julia and Julie?). Either way – she was terrific! While Julia Childs’ voice did get on my nerves, the way Meryl embodied her spirit and actions and joy of life made her come to life for me. I loved that movie! Now, ask me in a week which one is my favorite and I’ll have a different answer, because I can assure you, I will have watched another Meryl movie by that time!
