July Book Club Selection

that night banner

We’ve never chosen a suspense novel as a monthly book club selection before. In hindsight this was a huge oversight. But after reading THAT NIGHT by Chevy Stevens we’ve realized that we need a whole lot more suspense in our lives. THAT NIGHT is Chevy’s fourth novel, and easily her best yet. Tense. Gripping. Insightful. Filled with secrets, hidden motives, and surprises, this is the sort of novel you read in one wild gulp. And then process for a month afterwards.

Thanks to the generous team at St. Martin’s Press we have five copies of THAT NIGHT  up for grabs this month. See the entry form below for details.

That Night

They said she was a murderer.

They said she killed her sister.

But they lied.

As a teenager, Toni Murphy had a life full of typical adolescent complications: a boyfriend she adored, a younger sister she couldn’t relate to, a strained relationship with her parents, and classmates who seemed hell-bent on making her life miserable. Things weren’t easy, but Toni could never have predicted how horrific they would become until her younger sister was brutally murdered one summer night.

Toni and her boyfriend, Ryan, were convicted of the murder and sent to prison.

Now thirty-four, Toni is out on parole and back in her hometown, struggling to adjust to a new life on the outside. Prison changed her, hardened her, and she’s doing everything in her power to avoid violating her parole and going back. This means having absolutely no contact with Ryan, avoiding fellow parolees looking to pick fights, and steering clear of trouble in all its forms. But nothing is making that easy—not Ryan, who is convinced he can figure out the truth; not her mother, who doubts Toni’s innocence; and certainly not the group of women who made Toni’s life hell in high school and may have darker secrets than anyone realizes. No matter how hard she tries, ignoring her old life to start a new one is impossible. Before Toni can truly move on, she must risk everything to find out what really happened that night.

But the truth might be the most terrifying thing of all.

Add THAT NIGHT to your Goodreads to-read list.

CHEVY STEVENS grew up on a ranch on Vancouver Island and still calls the island home. For most of her adult life she worked in sales, first as a rep for a giftware company and then as a Realtor. While holding an open house one afternoon, she had a terrifying idea that became the inspiration for Still Missing.Chevy eventually sold her house and left real estate so she could finish the book. Still Missing went on to become a New York Times bestseller and win the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel.  Chevy’s books have been optioned for movies and are published in more than thirty countries.

Chevy enjoys writing thrillers that allow her to blend her interest in family dynamics with her love of the west coast lifestyle. When she’s not working on her next book, she’s camping and canoeing with her husband and daughter in the local mountains.

I have read the last three novels by Chevy… Still Missing……. the name of the next one completely escapes me…… and That Night. I REALLY enjoyed That Night and gave it a stellar review at my site. It brought back so many emotions from that troublesome high school time. I love when I want to reach into a book and choke a character! Excellent read.

  27. Bonnie K. July 8, 2014 at 10:17 am #

  36. Dee in OKC July 10, 2014 at 10:17 am #

I HAD to stay up to finish That Night. Please believe me, I was so tired, had just come home from helping with evening vacation bible school, after working at office all day. But I just could not stop reading, I knew the climax was close, I knew I had it all figured out, I just knew “who done it”. BAM! I got whopped up side the head, what a surprising twist. It’s been a very long time since I could say, “didn’t see that one coming”! Probably should have caught it, but enjoyed being blindsided. Thoroughly devoured the ending with her parents also. Excellent read. Started That Night on Monday evening, finished Wednesday evening.

  37. Sara G. July 12, 2014 at 10:17 pm #

‘still missing’ is my favorite chevy stevens book.

  38. Mollie Katie July 12, 2014 at 10:17 pm #

That’s a tough call, I’m torn between choosing “Always Watching” or “Still Missing” as my favorite book by Chevy Stevens. Loved the intensity of the former, but preferred the subject/plot line of the latter. So I think my winner — by a hair — is “Always Watching”!!

  39. Elizabeth July 12, 2014 at 10:17 pm #

I’ve read them all and it’s a tough call but I think in this case the first book, “Still Missing,” is Ms. Stevens’ best work.

May I simply say what a relief to uncover somebody
that really understands what they’re discussing on the
web. You actually understand how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
More people must read this and understand this side of the story.
I was surprised that you’re not more popular given that you most certainly have the gift.

It’s very effortless to find out any topic on web as compared to textbooks,
as I found this article at this website.
