July Book Club Selection

Welcome to those of you stopping by after reading our devotion on Proverbs 31 Ministries. Your timing couldn’t be better. Today we announce our featured book club selection for July: Dandelion Summer by Lisa Wingate. And we’re also giving away a Kindle to one lucky winner!

Over the last few months our selections have covered some weighty topics and it’s time for a breather. We couldn’t have found a better story to land in this month than Lisa’s latest novel – perfect for the warm lazy days of summer.

A little about the book:

All of her life, Epiphany Salerno has been tossed like a dandelion seed on the wind. Now, with the death of Mrs. Lora – the family friend who took Epie into her home – the sixteen-year-old must move to Dallas to live with her indifferent mother and new stepfather. Trapped on the low-rent side of Blue Sky Hill, the half-Italian and half-African-American Epie doesn’t fit in-and soon finds herself on the wrong side of the law. To make restitution, she’s sent to work in another place she’s not wanted: a home on the upscale streets of the The Hill.

When J. Norman Alvord learns that his daughter has hired a teenager to stay with him in the afternoons, he’s determined to nix the arrangement. Widowed and suffering from heart trouble, Norman wants to be left alone. But in Epie’s presence, Norman finds a mystery. Deep in his mind lie memories of another house, another life, and a young black woman, a housekeeper, who saved him…

As summer comes to Blue Sky Hill, two residents from different worlds will journey through a turbulent past and find that with an unexpected road trip through sleepy Southern towns come a life-changing friendship…and clues to a family secret hidden for a lifetime.

You can read the first chapter here.

Lisa is giving away a Kindle to one lucky winner, along with a signed copy of the book and a little extra bling. If you’d like to win this prize pack, all you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post.

We will be discussing Dandelion Summer on our discussion forum all month long. If you’ve not signed up to become a member (it’s free!) we urge you to do so. You’ll have the opportunity to interact with all of our featured authors. This month all those who participate in the discussion will be entered to win a “Book-n-Bling Gift Pack,” including an autographed copy of Dandelion Summer and a bit of bling to go with it! For every comment you leave in the discussion, your name will be tossed in the hat.

Recently, Lisa’s Blue Sky Hill Series, set in Dallas, received national attention with back-to-back nominations for American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year Award for A Month of Summer (2009) and The Summer Kitchen (2010).   Pithy, emotional, and inspirational, her stories bring to life characters so real that readers often write to ask what is happening to them after the book ends.

Grown kids=empty nest. Married last June 15th and he packed while I was at work and on his own, decided that we were going to live closer to his family. “My family, My terms, Done!” were his words. Been living in WA state and he back in MI since Feb 11th. God has been my surving daily friend. Only because of Him am I still functioning every day. His words keep me going. Anything that I read that brings Him closer to me, gives me strength. Never have I felt so alone, but know that I’m truely not because God is with me. Praying for answers. Open to whatever God would have me do.

I recently decided that I was going to start making time for myself and reading used to be one of my favorite past times. Working full time and being a single mom doesn’t leave a lot of room for “me” time. However I’m determined to do it and from reading chapter one I think this may be a great book to start with. If I don’t win it its still a must have.

At the moment the storm is raging on so many sides of me and those close to me that I have been too petrified to move at all. I am praying that Gods whisper will be more of a shout that I dont miss so that I know what to let go of and which side of the boat to get out of!!! This book would be a great blessing to me as I know that it is through books that God has calmed and spoken to me so many times in the past. Take care and God Bless – Tracey

The devotion for Bad Boats led me here. I’ve been dealing with my mom’s addiction for years along with the baggage I had nno idea I carried. I’mm ready to get off this boat and pray that my mom gets off hers before it’s too late. I asked myself the same questions your sons did about my mom….I could say much more. Thanks for the devotional this morning

I enjoy the daily devotions so much that I share them daily with current and previous co-workers, friends and relatives. I appreciate the opportunity to share Christ with others through your words and in-site. So many times my good friend will email me back to thank me and say the same thing I feel that this devotion was written me. Another co-worker reminds me if I go a day or two with out sharing a devotion that she has been looking for them. Thank you for your God given gift which gives hope and encouragement every day.

  27. Carolyn July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I had kind of been in a low spot in my spiritual life. Not seeking, just treading water. This morning’s devotion gave me inspiration, to seek God in a fresh way and to try to get rid of some habits that are affecting my attitude. I realize that these are not always habits that some people would see as destructive, but when they affect my attitude I see they are a sin. Thanks for being obedient and writing from your heart. I am amazed at how our children can give us such wisdom at times.

  28. Cheryl Smith July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Having read the first chapter of Dandelion Summer I was impressed with Lisa ability to paint an amazingly vivid picture of the character Norman. Her writing style makes for easy reading. I am hoping that the book continues in this fashion as it will definately be difficult to put down. Having fed the reader enough juicy tidbits in chapter 1, I have been left wanting. Wanting to learn mare about the seven chairs, the mother in denial, the daughter with the busy schedule the man who wants to meet hhis Father. Seems the Father may not be ready for the man yet. Chapter 1 draws us into a world that is very much todays reality. I would love to own this book and share in the mystery, tears, discovery and the essences of love that is sure to follow.
    Wow thank you Lisa.
July 5ths Bad boats devotional led me here and already I am convicted of a few truths….can there be more??”?

  38. Frankie July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your little boy certainly spoke beyond his years when he gave us “bad boats” to think about. Everyday is a battle against sinking ships and trying to stay afloat. But thanks to you and others in the Proverbs 31 ministries, you give us positive thoughts and ideas to explore to help keep us afloat.

  39. Sandra Spivey July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I normally don’t leave comments but the Lord lead me this morning not sure why, maybe it was your devotional Bad Boats. I have struggled for many years with the shame of growing up with an alcoholic father and all the embarrassing moments it caused my sister and myself. I forgave my father 10 years ago on his death bed and finally I had released the bitterness and anger in my heart. However, my sister still has a very hard time. She just can’t seem to let it go. I have talked and prayed with her so many times all I know to do is to keep praying for her to be able to release the anger she still holds on too. She loves to read so I am constantly looking for books when I see one that she would like from Proverbs 31. I just ordered the magazine for her birthday. I think your new book would be one she would enjoy reading. Thanks for dedicating your life to do God’s work by writing to glorify him and help others seek him. You have a gift and you use it well.
    Sandra

Very thankful for your devotions and your heart to share what the Lord has taught you. So amazed at the life situations, bad boats and our children the Lord uses to teach us, and grow us into His Glorious Image. May we all find freedom and healing as we let go of the bad boats in our lives and are changed from glory to glory. To God be the Glory. Look forward to your book series.

What a neat idea this is. I love to read Christian fiction. It has often touched and opened my heart in a rich way.

  52. Berta Malpass July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

As I read the devotion “Bad Boats”, I thought about how easy it is to step into a ‘bad boat’ and how difficult it is to have the courage to step out. We tend to think of addictions as drugs, alcohol, food – but everyday I see people addicted to television, email, computer games…. you see, addictions are not just those things the world views as ‘bad things’. They can also be good things that we treasure more than we treasure our Lord or even our families. Jesus pulled me out of the ‘alcohol boat’ 7 years ago. You can bet I will be looking closely at my life to see what boat I have wandered into without thinking.

  53. diane July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Why do we so often forget that God is always there for us? Thanks for the great devotional. God bless you.

  56. Dianna DiGiacoma July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

So many of us are tossed about in life and our dreams take a different turn from where we think we should be. But God always uses places us where He wants us to be, at the right moment in time, to touch those lives He loves. May our eyes be open to His leading and may we be a blessing to whomever we meet. Thank you for writing this – I look forward to reading the entire book this summer.

One day He’s coming, Oh Glorious Day!

Thank you for touching the core of the human spirit and bringing focus of God’s loving power to transform that core from despair to hope to rejoicing. May you continue to be blessed with the gift of ministry through words anoited by His inspiration.

  58. Cherlyn Kelly July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Although I usually don’t read books like Dandelion Summer – this book has peaked my interest. I know what it’s like to be on bad boats and try to get off – and praying that the Good Lord would help me.

Sometimes He has and sometimes I feel like He’s just left me out to dry – but I know that in the end there are lessons He wants me to learn.

But God how I hate some of the boats I’ve had to be on – including the one of healing from the murder of my son.

    God Bless you.

    Cherlyn

  62. christine auker July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

i just found proverbs 31 ministry through a bible study my church’s ladies are doing. i’m really enjoying reading the devotionals through email and facebook posts, which led me here. i LOVE to read. i don’t have a lot of time with preparing to move to my husband’s home farm, six kids that i homeschool, and then gardening and mowing. just add all the “lovely” life frustrations from children growing up, my parents getting divorced, most of my close friends living farther away including my family being USA scattered…..this book sounds enjoyable to escape to for a time. my bad boat attitude is needing to have some leaks fixed!

  63. Susan Hyman July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for your very generous giveaway.. I love your books and will certainly purchase this one though an autographed copy would be very exciting!

  64. Sally July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I always look forward to my devotion from Proverbs 31. Life itself can be described as being in a boat, sometimes we can be gliding smoothly acroxs the water, other times the waves can toss us about. As long as we keep our eyes fixed on Him, then we will not sink! I pray for all that are going through a “storm” right now. Thank you for this analogy from your devotion. I look forward to reading your book!

  65. Caroline Spradley July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

It is so much easier to see bad boats in others’ lives…. praying that God would reveal my own and help me to risk whatever is necessary to get out of them. Thanks for your ministry and for pointing us to Jesus!

  66. Tracy Goldbach July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Sounds like a great book, I can’t wait to read it. I’m always looking for good Christian books to read, I’m making my way through Karen Kingsbury right now! Today’s devotions was great too, I know so many people who are in that “sinking boat” but until they decide they are ready to get out there is nothing I can do. It hurts to stand by and watch.

  67. Emily Winslow July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved “Tending Roses” and have read it several times. I am looking so forward to this new book! I can hardly wait! Your devotional reminded me of how God uses others, especially children, to get His point across.

  68. Josie Lytle July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your devotional hit a tough spot today. Is reading the “wrong” books like a sinking boat? I love to read and before I gave my life to Jesus I had a lot of favorite authors……who-dun-its with gory details. I finished one last night and wondered about reading how much evil can be in one person. A nice light, inspiring summer read is what I really need. Thank you! I will do some praying about my bad boats. Josie

  69. Lori July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

It has been so refreshing to discover female Christian authors through Proverbs 31 Ministries. Using these devotionals, God has taught me so much. I awake each morning eager to study His word and apply it to my life. It was only this morning, when I discovered the She Reads division of Prov 31 monistry. I am pumped!! Reading is a passion of mine, and to know I am filling my mind and spirit with Christian fiction warms my soul! (and soothes any guilt I have 😉 As a mom of three, taking time to read sometimes feels like a guilty pleasure. But, even if He only gives me a few moments a day, I can feel good about what I am reading.

Proverbs 31 Ministries has touched my life in so many ways. I have a folder filled with devotions that I can pull out to give as encouragement to someone or even for myself to read. As writers for the devotions as well as the novels , all of you have such a blessing as gifted writers. I am a teacher and love to read… especially in the summer. Sometimes I read a book a day! Thank you so much for sharing your God given talent of writing with so many of us. Your words that have been inspired by the Lord are touching and changing lives each day!

I have always enjoyed Encourgement devotionals each day and decided to delve a little farther this morning. So glad I did. Reading the first chapter of Dandelion leaves me wanting more. I have never read a “Christian centric” novel before. This one seems to open a door in my heart to do so. Thanks for sharing and i hope I can finish this book!

This looks like a great book. I hope to win a copy for my 16 year old daughter who is in a very bad relationship. Her boyfriend is always making her feel so small. I pray she will see past the lies and into the truth. She is a child of God and I pray she will stop fighting the one who can set her free. Jesus. She has walked away and is all consumed with everything contrary to who she once was.

  89. Cindy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This book sounds like a real good read and especially interesting to me as I have struggled with two sons with alcohol and drug addictions.
Thank you for your ministry and may God continue to bless you!

I just turned 72, and could relate to the man’s sitation, in Chapter 1 of your book. I would love to have an autographed copy of this book. Just in the past couple of days, I’ve finally admitted to my nephew and nieces that I need to move away from the house that my husband and I had bought in August 1983. He went home to be with the Lord in June 2005; and it has been hitting me lately that I need to simplify my life and not remain stuck in this big old house full of two lifetimes of clutter. My nieces have been trying to help, but with me in the middle of getting things ready to donate or get rid of, I always slow down the process. So I just told them this past weekend that I would like to take them up on their offer to come down to my house one day, while I am away, to see what they can do in way of organizing, etc. It’s been since then that I’vee also admitted I would like to move closer to where they live, which is an hour’s drive further north. However, I have three cats, and I do not want to give them up; that would not be fair to either them or to me, as i love my cats. I am interested perhaps in a condo (not a senior residence, that trns me off. But if a condo won’t let me keep my house, then I would consider a smaller house–although that would leave stuck with maintenance. But if I could keep my cats, and simplify my life (with my family’s help; that’s the only way I could hope to accompish simplifying); my aspiration are to build a new lifee of more time to serve the Lord through my writing of poetry, devotionals, and blogs; and also to determine the focus of a new LLC company I felt led by the Lord to form (it has just been approved). You see, I have never had time to devote to my writing the way I feel God is calling me to do, because of the overhead of this big old house that begs for attention, and leaves me zapped of energy to do anything about it.

I would love to read your new book, to find out how the man’s life with the young housekeeper goes! Chapter One was an excellent read!

  107. Joy Mason July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for taking the time to do these. Even though the book is out of my usual genre, it sounds very interesting. I’m definitely going to try it out.

  118. Audrey July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Lisa, bad boats blessed me this morning. I have so many times had to explain toy sweet children how our family members addictions are bad for them, they need to safeguard themselves so they are not lured into satans traps. But, i also have to remind them that we don’t need to look down in them, because Jesus died for our sins just as much as he did these others. We have to focus on our own failures/ fears and strive to do more for the Lord! Thanks again! Audrey

  119. Robin W. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for the Bad Boats devotion. Your son is very intuitive.

I pray that we all find the faith to abandon the bad boat and reach for Jesus’ hand.

  120. Beth Sloan July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’m relatively new to Proverbs 31 and I’ve been so blessed by it! Often, the encouragement is just what I need. Would love to read your book! I’m always looking for good Christian fiction!

  121. Ayla July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved your son’s analogy of bad boats. I can relate to those bad boats as I had many before I gave my life to Christ 6 years ago and it took some time for me to let them sail away from my life with the strength of the Lord of course.

I’ve recently developed an interest in Christian novels and would love to read yours as a first.

Thanks for sharing the first chapter and for using God’s gift in a way that reaches the lives of others for Jesus.

    Love and blessings.

Thank you so much for sharing your Bad Boats devotion….it really hit home with me. I think this may be the catalyst I need to get off my destructive self-talk, pity-party boat!

  147. Leigh Peters July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

It’s so much easier to stay in the boat than to take that step in faith. It took me a long time to step out and get out of the life I was living! All I did was ask the Lord for help and He did! I got out of the boat and that life and it’s been 21 years and I have never looked back! Thank you for all you do, I would love to get the book and bling bundle!

I’m fairly new to Proverbs 31 but your message today seemed to speak directly to me. I have been struggling with my “bad boats” although I didn’t have that name for them until reading your message. I’m searching for my way and maybe your book will help guide me or at least give me some strength to find the way off the boat.
Thank you for your words and your faith. They truly help those of us struggling to find ours!

  165. Lucretia L. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have heard about She Reads through the proverbs31 devo to which I subscribe. What is so awesome about the timing of today’s devo is the answered prayer! I was speaking to my sister just last night about how there are very few authors in the “Christian” genre that write books that draw me. Either I find them too fluffy or the storyline unrealistic. However, if I read mainstream fiction, I can find myself opening doors to thoughts and emotional ties better left alone. I am going to search for one of Lisa Wingate’s titles at my library or local bookstore prepared for a pleasant surprise. Thank you for this ministry.

  166. Becky July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This devotional has been a great help after my husband died last August, and at the same time, my son experienced trouble in his marriage. As they were deciding what to do, I would pass on these messages and devotions to my daughter-in-law, and sometimes to both of them. My mother always said to give away what you need; and encouragement has been a much needed commodity lately! Thanks for all you do.

  167. Lisa Rankin July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’ve been on many bad boats and in the past have often waited until I’m half drowned and very weak to get off. I love this analogy. I believe we also have to allow the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom as to the difference between jumping ship too soon and leaving a sinking vessel. If we are to stay, i belive He will calm the waters of our hearts and we will find grace and peace in the mist of our circumstances. It is amazing that the trials that God allows in our lives come with grace attached, where as the ones we bring on ourselves do not until we fully surrender and allow Him to work in and through us. Can’t wait to read your book. Thank you for it. Many Blessings to you

  168. Tracy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Unlikely friends are often angels in disguise… This book sounds like a good reminder of that. God’s blessings to you!

  169. Hazel July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This looks like a great book, can’t wait to read it! Also, love the devotional for today, how insightful of your young son to make a connection to the Bible stories he has learned to real life. That must have been an incredible moment as a mother to see that your son is really getting it. Understanding how to apply what he learns in the Bible to his real life situation. Very encouraging! Thanks!! 🙂

  178. Tracy L. Moore July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Wow, I am encouraged by the devotion and the little I’ve read of the first chapter of Lisa’s book. May God continually bless her. Thanks.

  179. Tina July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Hi, thank you for your devotion today. I can so relate as I see my 18 year old on a “bad boat” with poor shopping habits. Her dad has struggled with addicitons of other sorts for many years which eventually led to the destruction of our marriage. Although she sees that, she fails to see her issues with shopping. I would love to have a copy of this book for her. Thanks again!

  180. Ruth Dwyer July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Hi Lisa. Thanks for the reminder about choosing to get out of the boat. I have the issue, wanting food to fix something. It was good to see you list it in the Prov. 31 daily letter. Many times we think of distractions as “getting us through” when in fact they just waste another day, another hour, until when we look back, we have just gotten through too many years. One of my new verses is What ever your hand finds to do, do with all your might. Ecc 9:10. Never mind about the what if’s and could have been’s. It’s time to rest in my Father, and do life with Him. Thanks again. Ruth D

I have been receiving the Proverbs 31 devotions for years. How timely they have been over and over again to help me in my daily journeying with my God. I am glad for the realness that each of the ladies share. I know I am not alone. I have not taken up my enjoyment of fiction books in a long time and it will be relaxing to begin with this new one titled “Dandelion Summer”.

At this time, I am working through the Made to Crave books and DVD. I look forward to receiving everything my Heavenly Father has for me. Thank you to all for sharing your faith in our loving, forgiving, and faithful God!

  182. Joy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am new to Prov31 Woman but am enjoying the devotionals very much. I minister in Hungary where English books, devotionals, etc. are almost impossible to find. The online devotional makes it easy. While in the US I look forward to picking up this new book and reading it. Thanks for your ministry!

  183. Dorothy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This sounds like a great book to read and share.

  184. Julia July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Stopped over here after reading Lisa’s P31 devotion today. We all have our “bad boats” in some way or another; this helped me re-focus on getting off my own bad boats.

  185. Shelia July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This sounds like a great story. I can’t wait to read the rest of it. Thanks to you and the rest of the P31 team for the wonderful work you do.

  186. Sam July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This book really hits home. I gave been struggling with these crazy boats in my life for so long now. I would love to read this book! Thank you for the encouraging prayer and words of wisdom!

  187. Ann Marie July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

So timely…yesteray I struggled all day with the negative self talk and just couldn’t shake it. When your in that moment its so hard, feeling very alone. I’m ready to abondan that boat and look forward to reading the book. Love Proverbs 31. Thank you for being obedient to His calling. Blessings!

  188. Helen July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Hello. I have been reading and learning and enjoying many topics on the Proverbs 31 devotions. Many of them fit perfectly in my life. I am a mom of a son who is in prison and there are several moms I chat with that I found I can share many of the devotions with, partly because they are hungry for hope. Many of us have days that are hard to deal with, yet many of these devotions seem to cover just the right topic at just the right time. I enjoy sharing the Gospel of Christ and hope with them. Thank you. Oh and please enter me in the Kindle & book contest. I would really like that 🙂

  189. Debbie July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Sounds like a great summer read and also a possibilty of a great book to suggest to my own book club for our list next year!

  190. Paige July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

How I love reading each new message every day! I receive the Proverbs 31 daily readings on my work email as it has a calming effect and one I need to carry me through the day. This has been a great way for me to reconnect with God and bring him back to the focal point of my life as with kids a husband and a job sometimes the one most important gets pushed away. Thanks for the great reads! I too would love to receive the kindle but either way I look forward to reading your book.

  191. Brittney July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I cannot wait to read this new book 🙂 I am so excited! even though i dont have an actual book club. I look forward to the new book suggestions each month 🙂

  195. Chris July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you so much today’s devotion, it really it close to home for me. I’ve been on many bad boats in my life- and presently I’m in one that’s sinking. I’ve been on this same boat before, and didn’t learn my lesson. I ask God everyday, to help guide me- to where it is that he wants me to be. And I wait, but I’ve missed many signs from him as I’ve been to busy trying to fix the holes in the sinking boat- now when I look at it- I see, that he want’s me to address the situation differently. I should abandon ship, keep reaching for him, and know in my heart – that he will guide and protect me through the worst of it. Some things can’t be fixed, and we need to know when to get out, before we waste precious time trying to fix the holes on a boat that is irreparable.
Thank you again, and God Bless

  196. yvonne williams July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Book sounds very inviting, there seem to be many BAD BOATS that child will be dealing with. Thanks for your devotional.

I’m so glad to have stumbled upon your site while looking for a site I could recommend to some young women. Thank you for your faithfulness.

  198. Carol July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Loved reading of your younger sons comment in today’s devotional. It is so encouraging when the Lord uses a child to sum it up so simple and clear. Looking forward to reading your book this summer. Blessings on you.

  199. Ava-Ann Townsend July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have been receiving and reading Encouragement for Today for some time and it has been a true blessing in my life. I could relate to today’s message, which prompted some thoughts. I particularly loved the analogy of the boats and how so often we say we trust God, but are so afraid to step out of the “boat”. Thank for the reminder as to who we need to put our full trust in and that Faith without works is dead. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity and looking forward to reading your new book!

    Blessings.

My friends and I are studying Lysa’s “Made to Crave” this summer, and it brought me back to your site. I didn’t know Proverbs 31 featured fiction also. I love to read and write, and am excited about this book.

    Thanks for your ministry.

This looks like a great book and the devotional with Proverbs 31 was wonderful this morning! With a 22 month old and one due in October it’s been 22+ months since I’ve just read a novel for fun! Hope to pick it up and read it!

  204. Alison July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Sounds like a good book! Am looking forward to reading it.

  205. Marie Wisthoff July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This looks like a great summer read and one where I can spiritually grow while enjoying a good, clean fiction novel. I really appreciate Lisa for answering the possibly scary calling on her life to write such novels because they really help people like me to learn and grow in ways that I can sometimes connect better with. It’s easy to find myself in character’s not so much in books that are just talking to the general everyone. So thanks! I really enjoyed the devotional today, it’s helped me already and I pray it continues to do so!

  206. Davine Manson July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Wow is how I’m feeling right now. Through the daily devotionals that I receive each day I am fed with a word that I’m in need of right then and there. Each devotional has deeply touched and amazed me as it shows me each time I read God is real, he is good. He really is hearing my prayers! The sinking boat (out of the mouth of babes btw) was for me!!!! THANK YOU! Thank you for letting God lead you, for showing due diligence to HIS cause, HIS people and I graciously say thank you. I pray your continued success and blessings in Jesus name….amen

I LOVE JESUS! THANK YOU LORD FOR ALL YOU’VE DONE FOR ME!

I loved your Bad Boats devotional. The excerp from the book has me intrigued and wanting to read more. Have a great day.

  225. Karen July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Every summer I try to get my kids to read atleast two books during their break from school. This is no easy task since my son is happiest outside getting dirty and fishing for turtles out of our pond while my 14 year old daughter is busy having 20 conversations at a time via text messages. Dandelion Summer sounds like a perfect book for my daughter to read. It seems like it has enough drama to keep her attention while having a good message at the same time. As for my son . . . does anyone know of any good books about turtles? (ha, ha)

  226. Dianne July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I read your devotional today and the comment about “stepping away from one thing” really hit home and I can’t stop pondering what that “one thing” might be. Only one thing!!! I exercised today, only to eat two cinnamon rolls. I can make a list of things I need to step away from. Thanks for sharing what God tells you with all of us!

  227. Helen Price July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

We can all relate to the”boats” and the faith/trust it takes to step out of them! My daughter’s husband left her a year ago for another women. They have 2 young daughters. This was the family that we thought to be the most secure spiritually and in love! They have been married 7 yrs. This has been the greatest crisis that our families have experienced and it has thrown us into some “boats” as you can imagine. Yet, if you step out of the boats and run to Jesus, he can help you”walk on water” through it in ways you would have never imagined! We are asking Him to glorify Himself through this in whatever ways He see fit! We are still in the midst if the divore…but trusting Him to lead us and to do things His way!! Thanks for the reminder and to opportunity to get your book!

  228. shelley July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I really needed this devotional. I struggle w/a couple of BAD BOATS and was faced w/them over the holiday weekend. I relied on myself instead of Him and failed. Thanks for the encouragement.

I too have enjoyed your Proverbs 31 ministry! I look forward to reading your book. I am assuming that it will be available on kindle as well as hard copy? May God continue to bless you as you reach out your hand to give others the courage to get out of their personal bad boats.

  232. Shannon July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I would love to read your book!

  233. Crystal July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This book sounds wonderful! Just the way to round out my summer reading list. 🙂 Up next is Lysa’s “Made to Crave”, which ties in so wonderfully to your Bad Boat P31 devotion today. My two bad boats that need dealt with like now are overeating and overspending. The phrase about telling ourselves that we just can’t do it resonated very deeply. I can’t do it on my own, but I have to start by changing my focus. Thank you!

  234. Pamela July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I too feel like I am drowning. After a bad relationship that I felt like I had no choice to let go of (due to lack of remorse and failure to be truthful), I feel like I am in a boat being tossed to and fro. Thanks for your devotion today on Proverbs 31 Ministries!

  235. kerrie g miksch July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am looking forward to discovering another great Christian fiction author. I know that God let me straight to this website today for the very reason of uncovering this new author to me. Not new to others, just me. I need a new read for the summer. Thanks! Hoping to win!

  236. Sheila July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Loved your “Bad Boats” devotional this morning! It REALLY struck a chord in me, especially this line: ” So often, I find myself riding out the storm, clinging to the boat, when the truth is that Jesus is just an arm’s length away.” Immediately a picture of a situation that I’ve been struggling with for years came to mind. As a matter of fact, I was wrestling with it again just this morning before reading this. I know that there are many women out there that this devotional will resonate with. Thank you so much for sharing!

  237. Lisa T. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Trying to clear the clutter (aka, bad boats) from my life and live for Jesus. I look forward to reading the daily inspirations from Proverbs 31, and am excited to read “Dandelion Summer”. It sounds great. Thanks!

  243. Tammy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’ve had an icky weekend, full of anger and hurt feelings. The devo this morning is just what I needed. I might not have control over anyone else in the situation, but I can surely get out of the boat and walk to Jesus. 15 minutes of my morning gave me the gift to turn my day around, thank you.

  244. Linda Sue July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’ve been in a bad boat far too often – trusting food instead of remembering to Whom I belong – He is the only real security in my storm struck life. Praying I’ll keep a promise to myself – eat and spend only what is necessary not what is appealing. Bless y’all – even an old dog like me (almost 64) can learn and I’m so very grateful!

  245. Elizabeth July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

It always helps to hear about others “bad boats” when you yourself are waiting out a storm and dont know how to let go. thank you for the devo today.

  246. Tracy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just finished reading your devotional today called Bad Boats on P31. It was so appropriate for me as I had decided to begin a sugar fast today. My desire in starting a sugar fast was that I wanted to crave God more and food less – especially sugar- and I wanted not to be controlled by it any longer. So, to read your devotional about the bad boats in our life really gave me the confirmation that I was doing what God wants me to do. I would really enjoy reading your new novel and Lysa’s Made to Crave book at the same time as I think they would be a great inspiration to me along this journey I am taking.

  247. Kimberly Moteberg July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am new to Proverbs 31 Ministry. I am so thankful God led me to it. It is so wonderful to have daily devotions and resources by godly women that know what women go through. Thank you for sharing your heart! Bad Boats really spoke to me this morning. We all have some type of boat that we need to get out of and run to God. I look forward to reading DANDELION SUMMER as well as your other books. Thank you again!

I wish I had the book right now. I want to know what happens next? Does Epiphany go to the fancy Italian restaurant? Does her mom notice that she has been in her boxes?

Thank you so much for the devotion that reminds us to never take our eyes off of Jesus. Even if we do he will be there to catch us.

    Blessings.

I am not much of a reader but I do read mu devotions in the morning. And Proverbs 31 is one of them. I have really have been having a hard time this year with 2 surgerys in 3 months and giving God all the Glory for no cancer. But with all this going on, I have really felt all alone. I am looking forward to reading this book.

  253. Michelle Robertson July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Proverbs 31 Devotions start my day! God uses these ladies to teach me daily, each devotion is always just what I need. Thanks for always sharing in such a personal way.

  254. Karen Burns July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just started getting the daily devotions and they have all been right on to what I needed to hear. Today’s bad boats is putting into words what I have been thinking about with how I waste time on “bad boat” habits that don’t do any good for me and then leave me less time to do what I really need to do. I can keep the bad boat idea in my head I think that will help to stop the time wasting and look at what I need and really want to spend my time. Another picture is of a child asking whatyou doing? If God would ask me that would I be proud to tell Him what I am doing?

  255. Dee July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can’t wait to read your book. We all have things in our lives that we need to leave behind and get out of the boat in faith and trust!

Your devotion today was so true to heart for me as I have been struggling financially. My husband died almost three years ago leaving me with a lot of debt and raising our two children. I need to turn my worries to god and pray to become a better person. Thanks for making my morning.

Enjoyed today’s devotional. It was my first one. I am a new reader of Christian fiction and am finding it so much more fulfilling as well as entertaining. Thanks for the great devotional. I will remember to check out your books at our next summer trip to the library.

  265. Vanessa July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thanks for sharing about your new book, but for sharing, also, about “Bad Boats”. My home has a history also, but is our blessing and our haven & we have chosen to treat it as such. Will be glad to read more of Dandelion Summer!

  266. Angie Kellett July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Love the daily devotionals…..they are a great way for me to start my work day, which is sometimes very tough !!! The new book sounds very intriguing and I can’t wait to read it while on my beach trip !!

  267. B.J. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I enjoy reading the devotion every morning. I’m excited about the book as well asfuture selections. I haven’t been activly reading lately. Thanks!

  268. Sara Sizemore July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The title of the Proverbs 31 devotion, Bad Boats, made me read it. As a lover of boats, I know there are bad sides to boating (all the work and money), dangerous sides to boating (storms, accidents), and wonderful sides to boating (family, memories). During this season in my life, I am learning how to balance these issues to make it all work. Thanks for the encouragement!!

  269. Cathy Jackson July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Today’s devotional hit home for me in so many ways. It is always such a blessing. I have not gotten out of the boat in a while- I dip a toe in usually…..but then pull it back.

I used to read a lot- loved Southern Fiction, but got burned out on it- then after I had a baby I realize that I haven’t read a WHOLE book since! I long to read again and this sounds like the perfect book to start with.
    thanks for the opportunity….

  270. Pam July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Will add to my summer reading list!

  271. vanessa July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you Lisa I’ve got some bad boats that i need to let go I can’t wait to read this new book. Also thanks for sharing your gift with us. Please enter me in the giveaway. Thanks have a wonderful blessed day.

  272. Maren July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I recently discovered your devotionals, along with a couple others I started subscribing to on bible gateway…I love them all. Yours gives me some things to think about and pointers/questions to ask myself…I really enjoy digging deeper into the Word in this way, it makes it more interesting and applicable to my life. I was really excited to learn you write books too! I love to read and your newest sounds like it will be right up my alley! Thank you so much! God bless!

  273. ashley morris July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your devotion today made me realize there are some boats in my life that really need to sink. The one that stuck out the most is the boat that tells me losing 50 lbs to become healthier (and get a better handle on diabetes) is impossible.

  274. Rene' Robertson July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for your encouraging words in your devotion this morning. I struggle with overeating. The sinking boat analogy touched my heart. Last September I joined a Celebrate Recovery study group which is changing the way I live my life. I am finding victory in Jesus with my overeating and feel the burden of addiction lifting from my shoulders for the first time in my adult life. It will be a daily struggle for me, but I am so thankful for our Father in Heaven who lifts me up every day to face the challenge!
I look forward to reading your book. I am having surgery in about 10 days with a couple months of recovery after so I’ve been looking for books to keep me occupied:-)
Praying God will bless you and your family in ways you never imagined!

  275. Angie July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This devotion was meant for me this morning. I’m dealing with a bad back going on 3 weeks now and depression(bad boat) has really set in for me. This has given me new perspective and hope for a better tomorrow. I’m looking forward to reading Dandelion Summer…..I love Christian fiction! Thanks so much!

  276. Lora Moseley July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can’t wait to read your book! IMy brother was brutally killed 2 weeks ago and I must look to Jesus instead of the circumstances. Thank you for your ministry.

  277. Nancy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

    Hi Lisa,

I love your devotion for today, and how kids put things into perspective. It’s those things that we never forget! I will be checking my boat before I set sail! Thank you!

  278. Teri H July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I recently read several books by Lisa Wingate and LOVE them! This one is added to my list to read now!

  279. Shirley H July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can relate to being in the boat. I have been in many boats of various sizes. I undoubtedly have survived some of my rocky boat travels and look forward to reading the book to gain more confidence in surviving my current boat travels.

  280. Johanna July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  283. Nancy Gregg July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I love to hear children lead the way to our better understanding of God’s love and protection. How accurate your son was in matching the sad dependency on drugs instead of on Jesus. Your book Dandelion Summer sounds great! I have just begun my trend of reading novels with Christian themes this summer and am really enjoying it! Your new book sounds very interesting and I am going to look up your previous books mentioned as well.

  284. Jill Hedrick July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I love Proverbs 31 Ministry and you have captured my attention with this book, Dandelion Summer. I KNOW I need to read this book! Thank you

  285. Michelle July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

LOVED the Bad Boats devotional. It was a timely message for me as I have recently started trying to work on my Bad Boat of self-depreciating talk. I need to remember who God says I am, not who satan tries to make me believe I am. After all, God says I am His workmanship! Fearfully and wonderfully made! With God all things are possible…and… a little bling is a good thing! 🙂

  286. Sha July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Can’t wait for my book! Today’s post speaks directly to my heart. It’s hard to work in the time we should all spend in God’s word, but your devotionals always draw my attention back to where it should be. Each one is a blessing. Thank you!

  287. Wendy July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Wonderful devotion today. It fits right in with the Bible study I am doing. Thank you! I can’t wait to read “Dandelion Summer”!

  288. Carol Foose July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

    Dear Lisa,
Chapter 1 is a great appetizer. I look forward to reading the rest of the story. This is a situation many of us will have to face. Than you for the opportunity to view this on line.
    God bless!

  289. Jackie anderson July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you so much for this today, I have a hard time struggling with a bad situation. It helps to know there are others in the same struggle.

  290. Teresa Wright July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This looks like a great read. I ‘ve been very busy with life the past few years and have just started to read again. I am looking forward to your book. I am hoping for a kindle for my 40th birthday in August and this will be a great start. Thanks for your devotion to Christian women everywhere.

  291. KimP July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Oh I can’t wait to read Dandelion Summer!! I love how your characters can see the bad boats so easily in each others lives, and not their own… boy oh boy how true that is so often with us Christians!!! Really looking forward to it, Lisa!

  292. Angie Rouse July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

It is nice to have a nice summer read, and I would love a Kindle to read it on!

  293. Jan July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Looking forward to a summer read that will be encouraging and uplifting – something hard to find in the usual bookstore. Thanks for being a part of the daily devotions in Proverbs 31 ministry – would not start my day without the insight and scripture!

yOU ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION EVERYDAY!

  295. Angie July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your devotion struck home this morning. Another beginning of the week wondering if my husband will ever let go of his addiction and trust in the Lord fully for all of his needs. I can’t wait to read your new book. I am going to try to read all of your books this summer. God’s blessings to you.

  296. Robin Shepherd July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  297. Renee July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

God is GOOD! He is more than sufficient to meet all our needs and yet we keep seeking answers in so many other places and people – even good things can be bad when we allow it to take the place of God. Can’t wait to read your book. Every resource that redirects our focus to our loving heavenly Father is needful. Thank you for your service for His kingdom.

  298. robin July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

    Can’t wait to read it!

This new book looks great and I look forward to “the rest of the story”! I’ll need to introduce your selections to our book club! Thanks much!

I am excited to read your new book and to join the reading club. Thank you for the opportunity.

  307. Tara July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am in a boat right now, that on way hand looks like God has put us there and on the other looks like we were totally deceived. I have been trying to throw my faith line out there and connect it to the ‘Power’ that can actually change my situation. I am believing hard core that God will and is intervening, He needs to, He’s got to. I look forward to reading this book. Thank you for your word of encouragement today.

  308. rachel July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

so excited for a good summer read…what an encouragement!

  309. Suzanne July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  310. Jenn July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Hi! I loved your devo for this morning! I began thinking of friends in my life that have unhealthy relationships, additions, etc, and that is when I realized I’ve got just as much baggage and pain as the next person. Thank you for putting things in to perspective. I can’t wait to read your book!

  311. Lisa Wingate July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

What a joy to wake up today (On Dandelion Summer’s first day on the shelves, no less!) and find all of you here. By far the best thing about writing is the way God uses it to build bridges between people in different places, with different lives. I pray his blessings on all the BAD BOATS mentioned here today and on other needs that go unmentioned. I know He is faithful and always waiting through the storm.

I loved the comment about how it is easier to see others’ bad boats than your own. That made me laugh a little because it is so true! You’d think we would feel the water rising around our own feet, right? I’ll bet Jesus just shakes His head at me sometimes.

Thank you for supporting Dandelion Summer. It is a very special book for me and for my reader-friend, Ed Stevens, whose story inspired the tale of Norman and Epiphany.

I ask you all to pray for baby Cooper today, whose parents are neighbors/friends/church family. He was delivered early to his young parents because of complications, and the doctors are working furiously to stop seizures and problems with his lungs. The problems are something of a mystery, but I know that God is there. Please blanket Cooper and his parents in prayer today!

  312. Elizabeth July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Amazing…….. I just read today’s devotion and the summary of the book and I can’t believe how both mirror what I’m experiencing now in my life. I’m ready to read the book, join the discussion, and learn more of what God can teach me through your gift. Thank you.

  313. Robin Collins July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The book sounds like a must read to me. I am at a crossroads in my life and find help and comfort in these devotionals every day. I am an avid reader and would love to have a Kindle and new reading material. My husband left 5 months ago and I am raising our 2 sons right now. Hoping for reconcilaition – but not sure that is what is best for us. Would appreciate prayers more than anything. Thank you for your encouraging words in the P31 Devotional. God Bless.

  314. Renee July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for the devotional this morning, what a blessing!

  315. Julie Mauer July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

wow – on a sinking boat – this book sounds awesome; and feels like exactly where I am and have been for 5+ years.

These daily readings have been so helpful – and the ingredients in these daily readings – usually come at the most “coincidental” times. (Even though I’ve come to believe that there are “no such things” as coincidence.)

    Thanks for your words.
    Julie

  316. Melissa Poling July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you so much for the devotional this morning, Bad Boats. It was exactly what I needed, but didn’t realize it. I would love to read more from you, and a Kindle would be perfect! 😉 Thanks again for the bright start to my morning.

  317. Ashley July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Wow! Ever have those moments where the Lord seems to knock you right between the eyes with something?! Me. This morning. The P31 devo was just what I needed! I can’t wait to check out this book! What a blessing this will be to so many!

  318. Z July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This devotion hit the nail directly on the head. Sometimes I’m afraid to step out of the boat even though I know and have experienced his wonderful blessings. Thank you for bringing His word to me everyday through these devotionals.

I love Christian fiction and learn so much about relationships and how to look to God in all situations.

  321. Paula Segers July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Great devotion today! After reading it, I prayed for God to help me leave what I need to behind and trust fully in Him. I always believe I truly have faith in God, however, when I examine the details of life I am reminded that I hold on to things I shouldn’t.
Can’t wait to read your new book. Thank you, Lisa!

  322. Kristin July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Look forward to these messages every morning – the book looks great & will start looking into your entire collection of books. Have a wonderful day!

thanks for the great devotion this morning! I look forward to reading this book in the near future!

  328. Stephanie July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

So often we read the stories in the Bible and think of them as simply stories…this morning’s Bad Boats devotional helped remind me that my life is mirrored in those stories. I have no doubt Lisa’s new book will highlight that once more. I cannot wait to read it!

  329. darlene dunlap July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This book sounds wonderful, can’t wait to read it. I love the song “praise you in the storm”, and your devotion today about looking to Jesus instead of the water brought this reminder to me. I really want the type of faith that looks to Jesus instead of the storm. After going through a very terrible storm in my life, and getting angry at God, I have renewed my faith. I found through the jorney that Our God is an Awesome God, and is faithful, even when we are not. I will be looking forward to reading the book.

  330. Kellie Stocker July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Inspired by the devotion this morning and intrigued by te description of your book!
I find myself hoping to win and look forward to reading about the characters. I love the names you have used in the description. Sounds like a perfect summer day to sit an tarry reading in a hammock. 🙂

  332. Lori Simmons July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Love today’s devotional as so many times as a parent, I wonder how much is sinking in as we guide our children. This book club sounds fun since we can all enjoy a good Christian read and always learn a little more about ourselves while we do. Thanks.

  333. Dianne Hall July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thanks for a great devotion today! Children can have awesome insights for us from the Bible stories they are taught and what the Lord teaches them. I am reminded of the Rhema word that God gave me thirty years ago from Isaiah 43:13: “All your children will be taught of the Lord and great will be the peace of your children.”

  334. Melinda Treadway July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I enjoy reading Christian fiction, but often I don’t make the time to read during the school year. I’m purposefully reading this summer and totally enjoying it! I’m almost done with a second series and ready to find something new. I’m glad to find the SheReads site!

  335. Heather July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The “bad boat” analogy is awesome. It really helps put things into perspective. What an insightful little boy. I am looking forward to reading Dandelion Summer!

  339. Sherry Vaughn July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The first chapter was wonderful. I’m in about the same place as Deborah….having an aging Mother and Father to see about and neither or them wanting to be seen about by me. Just reading what could be going through the old man’s mind helped me.Thanks. I am going to see if our library has some more of these books.

  340. Barbara Cole July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

After reading the Proverbs 31Ministries devotional this morning I followed the link to “She Reads,”and I’m so glad I did. After reading the “a little about the book” and the first 2 chapters of “Dandelion Summer” I can’t wait to read the rest and join the book club discussion.

  356. Diana T. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I was moved by your devotion this morning. I have been riding in many “bad boats” that I would like to sink. I know the only way I will be able to do that is by listening to Jesus and not the other voices of the world. Only then will I be able to walk away from the “bad boats” and begin living for Him.

  357. Peggy S July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The book sounds great! Thanks for today’s devotion and for the giveaway!

Thank God for the love and devotion that He gives us daily, especially through the daily devotionals. How encouraging it is when you know the boats in your life and how they are literally trying to take you under daily. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

Today’s devotion gave me some thinking to do. What would I like to leave behind? I’ll be seeking the Lord’s will about this. Thank You

  364. Char Houghton July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am blessed to get the Proverbs 31 devotional every day. Today, after reading it, I clicked on the She Reads link. What a find!!! I don’t have alot of time to read so what time I do have I try to spend it on books that will challenge me to be more like Jesus every day. I ‘m looking forward to reading Dandelion Summer on vacation in a few weeks. Thanks for your ministry. God bless you today.

I am ready to step out of a big boat (like a CRUISE ship!) in my life. I am looking forward to getting your book & participating in the online discussions.

  367. Meagan July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Looking forward to reading your book

  368. Lidia July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The analogy of the boat was inspiring ! Isn’t it amazing how children have such vivid insight? I learn so many Godly lessons by listening to my kids! When we have a heart that ‘thirsts after God’. He speaks through a variety of people and surprising moments throughout our life.
I also think of the lesson learned from David when he battled Goliath. When we focus on our God courage rules. When we focus on our giant, fear rules and we fall. Isaiah said it so well…God will keep him in perfect peace who’s mind is stayed on Him.
Thank you so much for your commitment to bringing Gods word! How privileged and blessed you are that God is using you!!!!

So thankful for the devotional today. I am caught up in a sinking boat at this very moment..relationship, destructive self-talk..and, truly love the reminder to get out of the boat and walk to Jesus. I would love to read the book, and win the gift pack… Thank You. And, thank you for writing books that remind us of Jesus love…

  371. Carol July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your new books is definitely a book I think I will read. Today’s devotion was one that really touched me. I have been struggling lately with a lot of situations.

Thank you for all you do.

  372. Danae Klock July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This sounds like the perfect read for my upcoming vacation. I haven’t read any of Lisa’s books yet, but am thrilled to be introduced to it today. Thank you for the devotion on the bad boats. Lisa, you’re son’s comments about the sinking boat were heart tugging. I was also struck by the history of your home. My husband and I moved into our home that has a similar background story nearly 3 years ago. Through our love for each other and our relationship with God, we’ve been able to turn this home into a happy home with walls that reflect the love of Christ, even to the point where some of our neighbors have noticed as well. Thank you for your devotional today. May you, your family, and your home be blessed today!

  373. Anita July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

this devotion resonated with me because I have been on that boat…..i would love to read your new book. Thanks for touching the lives and hearts of many.

  374. michelle July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

sounds like a great read! Have a neighbor who could use this message about sinking boats. thanks for the P31 devo today.

  375. Christine Martin July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just read the devotional on the sinking boats in our lives and it so encouraged me to be more mindful of reaching out to Jesus. Due to circumstances in my own life and choices I have made I had to learn to be independent and I tend to forget that I don’t have to do things by myself and through my own strength because Jesus is not only right there with me but He lives in me. The book sounds inspiring and encouraging and I can relate to the feeling of being tossed about like dandelion seed. I can’t wait to read the book. Be blessed!

  376. Sue July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This devotion came at exactly the right time for me. I have been praying about a position on a board I sit on that is going no where, and have felt the need to get out of the boat. Your devotion has been an encouragement. Can I order your book on Kindle?

  377. Jen July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The devotion this morning has hit home for me in more ways than one. God seems to give us exactly what we need for what is waying on our hearts at that moment! I would love to read your book, Dandelion Summer, maybe it would shed some light on the gloominess of my past. Thank you for sharing!

  378. Pam July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Was touched by the devotion this morning and then blessed to read the first chapter of your new book. A Kindle and a book would be a blessing, but I’ll be finding your book even if I don’t win. Thanks for the word.

  379. Lynn Blessing July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to have a resource for books that focus on reality instead of the “trash” that seems to find it’s way into so many otherwise decent stories. It’s like finding a theatre that shows only great, G-rated movies! Thank you.

  380. Sarah R July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for today’s devotional, definitely words I needed to hear. I love to read…this book sounds very interesting. I look forward to reading it.

I was so touched by your “Bad Boats”, I am giving it to a friend to use in her lst grade Sunday School class. I am looking forward to the discussion forum. I have never done that before and it sounds like fun while reading the book.

  383. Kreena LeLaCheur July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved the devotion. Life does present us many opportunities to have discussions with our children, and it always amazes me what thoughtful answers come out of those little mouths.

I look forward to reading the book. Thank you for the chance at the giveaway.

  384. Donna July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have really enjoyed the Proverbs 31 Ministry e-devos and how they are relevant to every day life. I have forwarded many Proverbs 31 e-devos to friends and family. I will forward today’s… don’t we all have sinking boats. Thanks for helping us think about this and to see that we can do something about our sinking boats!!! I hope that several of my friends and family will want to join the book club as well.
I am looking forward to the book club. I have never participated in a book club so this is a first and I am excited to see how it will work.

Thanks for using technology for His kingdom and for making a difference!

If you could step away from one thing that is dragging you under, what would you leave behind?

You captured my undivided attention with your first sentence.

I’ve been unsettled for so long but was able to answer your question immediately.

No doubt that was God working through you.

I look forward to reading your thoughts. I have a feeling I’ll be able to hear them from your heart.

Thanks Lisa for a great devotion! It was powerful and definitely challenging as I reflect and examine my own life for the “bad boats” that keep me from fully experiencing the presence of the Lord. I am excited to read your new novel!

  407. Lauren July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

What a great book for this month! Thank you for a GREAT devotional today at P31! I am going to share it with my children! You are one of my go-to authors!

Thank you for so many times Proverbs 31 Ministries has blessed me! Dandelion Summer sounds like a great novel, and I’m always glad for a Christian emphasis whether I’m reading it or plan it for a gift. God bless.

  409. Lynette F. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for the P31 devotional this morning. We have ridden a lot of boats, but I think the hardest one to ride in is the one next to someone on a bad boat when they won’t reach out for the help that is being offered to them. It is so hard to watch! Thankfully we can rely on God who loves us & them more than we even can humanly. Dandelion Summer sounds like it would be a great read … especially on a Kindle! Thanks putting these feeling into words.

  410. Lisa July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you so much for your devotional, today! My husband and I have a 37 ft. sailboat and I can really relate to your sons analogy. Wow, out of the mouth of babes comes true wisdom!

  414. Abigail F. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Lisa, it is always amazing to me how God works through people like you and the others at Proverbs 31 to speak to us in the big wide world web. Today, as with so many other days of devotion, speaks to my heart and convicts me to lean on my Father and my Lord to live my life. It is all too easy to slip into the bad habits touted by the world that say”this……., this will make you happy, when really true happiness only exists in a life lived God’s way.
Thank you for sharing your skills and experiences, and your life with me through this journey. have a great day today.

  415. Lisa-Noelle July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

A dear friend sent me a Proverbs 31 devotional last week (Where did the Time Go?) and I immediately joined the mailing list. What an amazing find! Just the week before I was talking to my friend about raising my daughter in today’s world and the next day she sends me this devotional. I think one of the most beautiful things about your devotionals is they show me that I am not alone in my struggles in this world. My prayer since school ended this year, has been that the Spirit keep me strong in my faith and principles during the summer. And then he answers with your devotionals! Thank you for the truth you share and the encouragement that comes with it!

  416. Megan C July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am unfamiliar with Christian fiction novels, but I would start with this book.

I want to stop looking at the ‘angry’ waves of marriage/life and get out of my angry boat! This is not a behavior I want to pass to my daughter. Thank you Lisa for your Spirit led devotion. Thank you Proverbs 31 team for surrendering and being such godly encouraging examples. May each one of you be blessed. Praise and honor to Him!

  425. Alicia Mohamed July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I ran into this post from reading a devotional that was right on time for me this morning, Awesome that God is so timely..you need Him, you ask for Him and He shows up..it’s up to us to recognize Him! Thank you for sharing this story , today I want to get rid of some “bad boats” of my own, I can’t do it alone, but if I reach out and hold His hand I can! ~ <3 Thank you

  426. Jennifer Brown July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I live and learn through analogy, and what a good one! Sometimes our children teach us more than we can teach them.

I have not read any of your books before. I am excited to have found this book and am looking forward to reading it.

  427. Whitney July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Looks like a great book! Putting it on my list!

  428. Carolyn July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank you for the devotional today. I, like so many others, have a boat or two that I need to step out of in faith. At times I think I am so close to it but at other times, I feel like I am so far away from taking that step. Hopefully I can take a deep breath and take a leap off the boat!

I haven’t read a lot of Christian fiction in recent years but your new book does peak my interest.

  429. Debbie Pinner July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This sounds like an exciting work of fiction. A chance to win a kindle to help me read it would be the cherry on top of my summer sundae!!!!!!

  436. Kim July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Your devotion touched my heart this morning because I have experienced what the former house owners went through. After almost 10 years of prayer, encouragement from our pastor and friends, and learning to reach out our arms to the Lord, we stepped out of the boat. My husband has been drug free for 9 months! We give God all the praise and glory for his recovery!

It would be a blessing to receive a copy of your book. The Kindle and bling would be nice, too!

Thank you for offering this oppotunity.
    Kim

  437. Darlene July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I loved the devotion this morning. I can’t wait to read the book. Thanks

  438. Lynn Bowman July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I think this will be an enjoyable summer read! Thanks for the wonderful devotion. I often find myself in this situation, not wanting to get out of the boat, or seeing the need to get out but being frightened of the unknown, the troubled waters. Your words remind me that the One waiting with outstretched arms outside the boat is steadier and calmer than the raging sea i’m in. I only need to reach out my hands and surrender to Him. He will not let me fall or drown. Thank you again! Be blessed! *Lynn

  439. Janie S. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

After I read this morning’s devotions, I thought your book sounded like it could bring some encouragement. My family has “bad boats” and my heart is sick for the choices that are being made. Pray for our family, please.

  447. Patricia Kaye July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Every morning I count on the devotional of Proverbs 31 ministries. Today I am especially strengthened by Lisa’s encouraging words to get rid of one thing that is dragging me under. And want to get her new book, which will help me as I try to do that. My husband has been into pornography and seems to neglect me and his desire for me is seldom there anymore. I struggle with drowing in anxiety, fear, self-worth, anger and despair. I give this to God, but am constantly pulled under again and again. I need to get stronger and reach for His hand – for only God can pull me from this storm. He is in control and I need to ask for forgiveness for my sins of doubt and fear and turn to a life of trust in Him and security in Him. I have no control over what my husband chooses to do so I give him to God and trust in His love for both of us. I love to read and can only make it day by day with help from Christian friends and my loving Savior.

  448. Kimberly Vinson July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I am looking forward to reading Danelion Summer. I have found that in riding a boat, if even one person is rocking the boat and tips it over, everybody in the boat ends up in the water. Who is the captain of your boat and who are the other pasengers?

  449. Laura Coates July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Loved your devotion today. Our sermon in church this past weekend was also about faith and hanging onto Jesus. Way to reinforce a good message. Your new book looks very intriguing.

  450. Abby July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I can hardly wait to read this book. I think I’m in a sinking boat or a ‘bad boat’, but its hard to see it as bad when its all you want and can think about. Anyway, looking forward to reading it, hopefully soon! 🙂

Wow, did I need this devo this morning. I feel like I was run over by a truck today. What should have been a wonderful time with family and my grandbaby was a bittersweet day. I so praised God for the sweet private time to hold and feed and watch Nemo with my 9 month old gbaby girl!!! I have never been “allowed” to keep her and may never be allowed to. That is their issues. I am right with God and He loves me. That I know. But I have had to get off that boat so many times and put Him back on the throne yet every time I am with her I just get so sad it can take me right back to the boat and I don’t know how to reach out just to that arm’s length that I know HE IS at. I am afraid to let go yet afraid to stay. And now my marriage is crumbling around me due to all the stress of the issues with my daughter and her husband who is a non-believer and the issues I face mentally and physically. I WANT OFF THE BOAT. I would love to read your book and I have so prayed for a kindle as I LOVE TO READ. That is something my mother instilled in all of us as children and I did with my daughter as well and had hoped to instill in my gbaby. But I don’t have enough time to be with her for her to barely get to know me for them to even trust me with her. I was a good mother and God knows that and assures me that I did all that I could with the knowledge He gave me. I would love to win the prize you are giving away, but more than that, I would love to get off the boat! Thanks for the devo’s everyday. They hit me right where I am at, in amazing ways I cannot describe.
    God bless you all! <3

Thanks for all your books. I LOVE to read and reading Christian fiction is the best. Just to “get away” and relate to the characters and know that God is on my side too. Books are friends that are always there…
    Thanks again!

Today’s P31 spoke to my heart. Thank you. I was born in a bad boat and have spent much of my life hopping from one to another. Praise God I haven’t sunk.

I LOVE Proverbs 31 and look forward to reading Dandelion Summer. We all have those sinking ships in our lives that we need to lose and take hold of the ONE who can save us. I think this will go on the shelf in my classroom for my students to check out and read 🙂

  481. Lara July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I just read your devotional on Encourgment and it really spoke to my heart. I am looking forward to reading your books. I thank God for women of faith who inspire us to live a life that shines for Him.

  485. Christine July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Looks like a very interesting story. I agree with Tracy that at times throughout our lives, we can hop from one boat to another…some of these boats are small and we can jump away from them easily. Others are as large as an aircraft carrier and are harder to escape. I’m just glad that Jesus wants to me by life preserver when I rely on his strength to walk away from the big boats of life!

  486. Mary Metzing July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I also have too many bad boats in my life. Whenever I think of Peter and Jesus telling him he had “little faith” I think about how he was the only one that actually got out of the boat, sure he sunk, but he got out of the boat! I pray for enough faith to get out of the boat and to know that if I sink that He will be there to catch me, just like Peter.
Thank you for listening to God and doing this devotion today. I needed it!
I am looking forward to reading Dandelion Summer.

  487. Tina July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This looks like an intriguing read! I look forward to it coming out.

I’ve found that my faith in the unknown is what keeps me for making that “jump” off of that bad boat. This is a book that I will definitely need to read!

I’m new to the Proverbs 31 Ministries web-world and I must say I am quite excited and forever grateful for coming across this site. Of course, I firmly believe there are no accidents, it was my destiny to find this wealth of information. I have been in many bad boats but have always been saved from them before any really bad damage has occurred! Thank God! for that and for the daily encouragement I get from this site. I have shared so much information with my family and friends that they are probably tired of getting my emails. But that’s okay, it still excites me to forward it on to them. One day they will feel the same excitement I feel when I get an email from Proverbs 31. I haven’t had the opportunity to read any of Lisa Wingate’s books but I look forward to reading this one. God uses all of us in very different ways, and who knows maybe I’ll read something that I can pass along to others to bless them. Thanks so much for writing this book!

  505. Kathy Roberts July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have just signed up to proverbs 31 devotions and I’m loving it. What I like most are the little application steps that u can do in every lesson. It helps me to search out my own self and to ask God for help in doing so. After reading the devotion for today, I came across the book titled dandelion summer and I read a summary of the story and that grabbed me in. I love being able to read a quick summary about something and liking it enough to wanna buy whatever it is. Would love to get a copy of this book dandelion summer but especially with an autograph from Lisa!

I just finished reading Proverbs 31 devotion relating to habits, insecurities and all the other bad boats we sink ourselves in when all we have to do is reach for Jesus. I felt lead to read this this morning (I don’t read it everyday) as I was battling severe insecurities while at the beach yesterday with my family. Our chairs happen to be very near a perfect size 0 girl with a perfect face. I felt sick inside just knowing I wasn’t as good as her and just wanted to cry. After feeling prompted by the Lord to read todays devotion I now understand why he prompted me to read it. I am in a sinking boat called jealousy and insecurity. I need to reach out and grab Jesus to break free from these strongholds!! Thank you for all you do and yes, I would love to be entered into the sweepstakes!! 🙂

I’ve just started receiving daily devotionals from Proverbs 31 ministries and every one of them has tweaked the Spirit in me. I struggle with an eating disorder and am so grateful to Lisa and all the women of Prov31 who have helped me to see that my problem is not too small for God to handle and that He really wants to help me overcome this stronghold in my life as he draws me closer to Himself. Thank you for all that you do. I can’t wait to read some of the books that you ladies have written!

Thank you so much for this devotion today. Most days I read the devotions & cannot wait to forward them on to others, but today I didn’t need to forward – it was meant for me! This was so thought provoking and soul searching. I would love to read your book – after losing my home & moving in with my other mother, I believe we both would enjoy the read! Thank you again – it is always a wonderful feeling when you truly feel God speak to you through others and their experiences.

I am thankful everyday for what Jesus did for me. He chose to call my husband home 19 months ago and I have been trying to “find” myself ever since then. The journey through grief is slow and painful, but the Lord has already borne my griefs and sorrows, so I move forward….closer in my love for Him.

  552. Sheryl July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have come to look forward to the devotion on Proverbs 31 each morning..great way to start the day. I’ve enjoyed a couple of Lisa Wingate’s books in the past and look forward to Dandelion Summer. Thanks for the opportunity to be entered for the Kindle!

I love the premise of a child taking care of an elderly parent. I personally love the elderly, their stories and wisdom fascinate me. Also, as my parents age, I know soon that I will walk that fine line of child/caregiver. I love to read in the summer and hope that the book is as good as the first chapter.

I am in a new woman’s book club at my church. I am so excited to have found this site with so many wonderful suggestions for books to read. This sounds like a great one to suggest. I would love to read it on a new kindle……

  555. Cori July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’m literally shaking…I am sitting in the lobby of a hospital with my husband, waiting to see his doctor. He is very ill and for the last 2 yrs I have drifted away from the Lord…would rather knit, watch tv, read fiction…slowly swingimg away from prayer, not reading the Bible. My husband knows the Lord, but today I have come to realize that I really don’t. If I loved Him like I believed I did, especially these last 2 years, why didn’t I see that He was the only One who could possibly be the “boat” I should trust for peace and strength to get me through the stress…husband’s kidney disease, dialysis and transplant. God made me compatible to him so exactly one year ago we had the surgery. The kidney is doing well. He’s immunosupressed and has suffered from aNorovirus for 3 months. He’ s wasting away. I find myself working overtime (a nurse) to help with bills. We had to declare bancruptcy after he could’t work a.ymote.

  559. Connie F. July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Read the daily devotional on Proverbs 31 and followed the link to here. I have not read any of these books, but something about the description tugged at my heart. Looking forward to reading them and to learning more about how to not “stay in the boat”.

This book sounds like it’s going to be great. I know I have been on some bad boats in my life and I’m so glad God is turning my life around. God is so good!

  562. Barbara July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

The book sounds wonderful. I love to read, but most of the books available now are full of four-letter words, sex, poor relationships, etc. It would definitely be a change for the better to read a book like “Dandelion Summer.”

  563. Cori July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Chatty me ran out of room. Sorry. I mourn the relationship we used to have, and now when I should be the wife God wants me to be, all I see myself doing is feeling sorry for myself, yet I would die for him. I have to die to myself first. When I read about this book. I immediately saw the way I had become and asked God to forgive me. My husnand is a Gift, and I will treasure every day we have together. Thank you! I pray we get good news today or sometime soon.

  564. Jennifer July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

  571. Debbie Harper July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I have read a couple of the book club books, Book of Days and Watershed Year. I enjoyed both books. They were not books I would typically read. I have been pleased with stepping out of my comfort zone of happily ever after books. I like escaping from the every day problems for just a little while. But I am trying to go beyond that and read books that change my prespective and force me to face some difficult situations in my life. Thank you for She Reads. Keep up the good work.

  572. Melissa Neise July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I feel like I’ve discovered a gold mine when I found this minisrty. I love to read. I’m so happy to read good clean books that actually have a life message. I also know that each of you pray over each word written. Thank you for writing and sharing your heart with us. Your devotion about the bad boat really hit home. We were that family whose dream house you moved into. That was our story except the drugs were prescription. All the same I didn’t get off the sinking boat til we lost the house. But God has restored me. I’m free today. You all have a part in it. I’m so grateful for proverbs 31 ministries. I love u all! In Him. Kim

Praising God and better understanding his love for us and others is what it is all about! Have an amazing and blessed day!

  607. Vivian ford July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

Thank god for books. The ability to pick up something that inspires you, something you can relate too, amd enjoy, has saved my life many times. They don’t don’t judge and they make you feel less than alone in the world. Many times I have felt alone in a feeling and reading that self same feeling in a book, makes me feel connected in a way that totally destriys any felling of despair. She reads and will continue to read as long as she can.

  608. Sarah July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

After a time of not reading as many books as I used to, I am getting back into it.

Many times it is very timely for what I think they need to read. I do hope to order your new book soon.

  614. Patience Hollingsworth July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

This sounds like an excellent book, which I’m interested in reading, because like so many others, I’ve often fallen into the trap of comparing myself to others. I also often find that it’s nothing but immobilizing to do this. So now, I try to live my own life, taking small steps to deepen my relationship with Christ, living in gratefulness for what he provides me, and trusting that what I have is enough to carry out his intended will for me. This is often still easier said than done, but is the perspective I strive to keep. Thank you for the chance to win your book and a Kindle! I’m sure I’d love the extra bling too!

  615. Susan July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I would like to thank all the women who do the devotionals on Prov. 31. They are so inspiring and believe it or not, i read the devotionals and most of them a referring to something that is going on in my life right at that moment. They have been a confirmation to me that God hears and He knows what we need, when we need it. Thank you and God bless!

  623. Nicole A Boles July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’m posting in hopes of winning this book. I’ve hit rock bottom in my life. I’m 28 with two beautiful little girls – a 1 year old and a 6 year old and only one Father pays child support and neither Father has much to do with my girls. I’m barely making it paycheck to paycheck and I’m hopelessly in love with a man who started out like everything I’ve ever dreamed of and now I know without any shadow of a doubt he is emotionally and verbally abusive – and I can’t muster up the courage to get out of it. Every day is an emotional roller coaster. I remember I was once happy… I remember being happy before him, I dont’ remember anymore how it felt. His presence is like a poison in my life. I don’t know what I’m waiting for. I spend at least an hour or more every day pondering suicide, and most of the rest of my day is spent sick to my stomach, wondering what else I can do to make him happy, how to stretch myself far enough to get all my priorities taken care of and then his too… at the end of the day nomatter how hard I’ve tried, nomatter what I’ve done, he never appreciates any of it. I hate my life. I hate that I love this man. I hate how I feel when he looks at me, or hugs or kisses me. I hate it. I’d love to read this book and perhaps for a short while sink into another world that would help open my eyes a little. Well, I guess my eyes are open. I know what he is. I know what needs to be done. So why can’t I do it? Maybe I need more help than a book….

  624. Andea July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I love a good book. Thanks for staying faithful to writing about real-life topics.

Your devotional at P31 today is so deep. Thank you for broaching this subject. During my lifetime I have ridden on so many bad boats. I will be reading this devotional again and again because I do need help to get out of these boats and walk the water with Jesus.

I would love to win your giveaway. I am sure the book will make a good read.

  627. Millie Torzilli July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I was a nanny for 10 years, caring for two girls and their family. I plan on buying Lisa’s book for them.
I have written over 400 inspirational poems and am in the process of having my first book published. It’s a joy to see how many lives are touched by Christian books. The message and blessings shared by Christian authors really makes an impact and a difference, and has has inspired me to put my poems into a book.
May God continue to bless all Christian authors and the many lives they touch with godly wisdom, grace and joy.

  635. Sheena Alexander July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am #

I’ve been reading the proverbs 31 devotionals for awhile now and they’ve always seemed to hit the spot…but however, for awhile I found myself not wanting to read them or not having the desire to read them all the way through…Praise God I was allowed clarity and peace within my spirit to start reading these beautiful devotionals that have blessed my life so much, to the point ewhere I would print them all off:)…It so happens that I have a boat of my own and I never really thought about it from this point of view…..Ddandelion Summer sounds just like what I need right about now to encourage me so that I can continue to encourage others with the gift that God has given me……Proverbs 31 has really been a blessing to me and I pray that you continue to bless others as well.
