I loved Isabella as a person, qwirky but fun!! I thought the letters added a lot to the story, yet did not give too much away.I kept expecting Claire to find the journal when she was doing all the research that would have all the letters in it. I was a little surprised she never found/saw them. But, it did not distract from the story that she didn't. Just went a different way than I expected.
I thought Isabelle was a fun quirky character as well.

Ok I'm hoping since I changed to another browser, I can fully participate better! Typing on that Ipod Touch was so not happening anymore. Apparently IE was not letting me post like I wanted.
Back to Topic:
Claire- what did you think of her motivation to paint the Degas, to do the forgery? Was it about the money she would receive? The show at Aiden's gallery? Or was it more the lure of the acceptance that she would get- having a show at Aiden's would be a step in the right direction for her come back to the art world (as opposed to reproduction work), but was there more to that? Did she want to tweak the art worlds nose just a bit? Was she justified in that thought? (I think she was- she made a mistake; but so did the world of art!)

I thought her motivation was more just to prove she could do it, that she was as good of a painter as Degas. I felt her motivation was mostly internal, not external.

Leigh Ann: After all that Claire had gone through, I do think she was trying to stick it to the art world a little bit. She had a painting hanging in the Musuem of Modern Art that was not acknowledged as hers. She'd been on the losing end of an affair and then a scandal. She definitely had something to prove. Her decision absolutely makes sense to me.

One could argue that Claire accepting Aiden Markel's offer was the moment things started to go badly for her. But in hindsight I think that's not the case. She accepted a business transaction (albeit a shady one). Many of us would have done the same. I think things began to go south the moment their business relationship turned romantic. It added a layer of complication and emotion that would not have been there otherwise. So my question is, did Aiden take advantage of her in two different ways? Do you think Claire was aware of that on any level? Or was she just so eager to prove herself and so lonely that she fell into the trap?

Late to the party! I wanted to add that I hd virtually no art knowledge and I think it made this book so much better for me, learning all about legitimate art reproductions etc. I loved Claire, yes she made mistakes, but I still liked her and felt like a was rooting for her througout the novel. I think Aiden was wrong to involve her and I was insure to all his involvement and what he did or didn't know.
Such a great book

Ariel: Interesting point about Aiden taking advantage of her twice. The romance did add a layer of complication (although I enjoyed the relationship). In the relationship, they reminded me of 2 thieves in a way- how can you trust someone like that completely?
I think Aiden took advantage of Claire at first or at least wanted to- but that ultimately it was the lure of the money, show, and sticking it to the art world that led herto say yes. Returning the work to the museum was just icing on the cake.
As far as their romantic relationship, I'm debating with myself if anyone took advantage then. I may need to re-read that section!

I think Clair was suspect of Aiden at first but then she was sucked in. She was swept into a different life style. The wow of AIDEN MARKEL – his suaveness, success (so it seemed), and upscale lifestyle combined with her lonliness and need to prove herself. Yes, I think that Aiden took full advantage of her. It pricked me a little when he was in prison and perked up when he thought she could help him. (not that we all are not like that) but it reaffirmed just how self centered he was. I felt like his over concern for her protection was a bit of a put on but I found myself wanting to believe that he was true.
