April Book Club Selection

Welcome, friends, to a new month and a new book club selection. If you are stopping by after today’s devotion at Proverbs 31 Ministries, we’re delighted you came. You have stumbled upon a group of women who share a love for all things Story. And this month’s story is one that we could not be more excited about: A Watershed Year by Susan Schoenberger!

As usual we have a myriad of prizes to give away. Our first place winner will receive a Kindle, pre-loaded with a copy of A Watershed Year. Two additional winners will each receive a copy of the novel. And one participant of our online discussion group will receive a $35 gift card to Amazon, all courtesy of Guideposts Books. (To enter, simply leave a comment on this post or sign up for our free monthly e-newsletter. Winners will be randomly chosen on April 15th.) If you do not have a local book club, or your schedule prevents you from attending one in person, we highly suggest you join our online group. It’s free and you will find Kindred-book-loving-Spirits from all over the world to engage in discussion with.

And now, a bit about the novel:

A Watershed Year by Susan Schoenberger

It was the year that everything changed.

It made me feel better to think that we could talk, somehow, beyond the end of my life, that I could preserve my presence in some small way. And I haven’t told you everything I should have. I wasn’t finished yet, at least where you are concerned…”

Lucy never confessed her love to her best friend Harlan before he passed away. Two months after his funeral, she is haunted by the power of things left unsaid when she receives the first of his e-mails arranged to be sent after his death. So begins the year that everything changes – Lucy’s watershed year.

In an e-mail Harlan says something that consumes her: He’s certain Lucy is destined for motherhood. In her grief she suddenly rediscovers hope, journeying to Russia to adopt a four-year-old boy. When she meets her son Mat for the first time, she realizes he’s also mending a wounded heart and is just as lost as she is. Together they learn to trust, each helping the other to heal. But just as they’re welcoming their new normal, Mat’s father comes to America to reclaim his son and reveals the truth about Mat’s past, which might shatter Lucy’s fragile family forever.

Susan Schoenberger’s breathtaking and powerful story of love, loss, redemption, and what it means to be a mother will leave you in awe as Lucy, in the depths of her greatest despair, somehow finds her greatest joy and embraces the beauty of second chances.

About the Author

Susan Schoenberger

Susan Schoenberger has been a journalist since 1984 at various newspapers, including The Baltimore Sun and The Hartford Courant. Her articles, essays, and short stories have appeared in numerous publications. A Watershed Year is her first novel. Susan lives in West Hartford, CT, with her husband and three children

What others are saying about A Watershed Year:

“A Watershed Year is a well-told tale of life and death and the way, when we least expect it, love can encompass us roundabout. In the intriguing relationship between Lucy and Harlan – a relationship that continues long after the death of one and well into the blossoming of life in another – this author has created a vivid and continuous dream of what it means to create a kind of family, for better and worse. This is a brave and moving novel.” – Bret Lott, author of JEWELL, an Oprah Book Club Selection

“Susan Schoenberger takes us to the softer places of the heart in her debut novel, A Watershed Year, where love – in all its forms and glory – transforms grief into grace.” – Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times Bestselling author

“A Watershed Year traces with subtle humor and grace the months after the death Lucy’s beloved friend Harlan. Schoenberger’s spot-on storytelling adeptly draws out the ways in which our closest relationships can be imperfect and yet continue to transform us. The story often tugged me to tears – as much for the truths it reveals about human interconnectedness as for the pain of Lucy’s grief. However, I never felt manipulated or yanked unwillingly to boo-hoo over standard sorrows. Her characters are lovingly quirky yet complex enough to be believable. You’ve never met them before yet you know they exist!” – Juliette Fay, author Shelter Me and Deep Down True

Win, lose, or draw, we encourage you to pick up a copy of A Watershed Year. This is one novel you don’t want to miss!

This book sounds fantastic. I just finished reading Priceless by T. Davis and can’t help but think of it when reading that this book takes a child from Russia. Though the book has a different subject I can’t help but believe that many boys are also waiting to be “rescued’

Thanks for such a great book suggestion-whether I win or not I will still read it!

HI, I would absolutely love to win this book Even if I do not win I still plan to read it. I just finished reading Pricess by Davis and though girls are the ones rescued there, this book made me think that boys also need to be rescued. It’s interesting that I would happen to read about two books that mention the plight of Russia’s children within such a short time period…much cause for reflection and prayer.

    Thank you.

I read the excerpt and am very intrigued with the line of this story. I love reading books, as it is my favorite past time. Its the only thing that kept me from going off the deep end after losing my 21 yr. old daughter, Stefanie, in 2009. It’s pretty amazing that the Lord uses stories to heal my aching heart and it surrounds me with hope and faith to go on to find a new normal!

I am looking forward to reading this book. oddly enough often times, people look at grief as someone dying but on my situation, it wasn’t the death of a person but the death of a relationship. After 10 years and 2 beautiful children, my marriage was over. Unfortunately, it was over long before I acknowledged it but after some soul searching and some prioritizing in my life, where I realized God wasn’t first, I was able to let go and let the grieving begin. By no means was out easy but knowing that someone was always there for me to lean and depend on for strength helped me make it. Today I stand stronger and far more joyful. I have forgiven all those involved in my divorce but more importantly I have forgiven myself. I am truly loving life and allowing life to love me.

I was very touched by the devotion today that Susan wrote. The excerpt from the book really resonated with me because I have two beautiful sisters in Christ who are both waiting for children they will be adopting from other countries. I think this would be a beautiful story to read.

I am an avid reader, so much so that my hubby has threatened to throw my books in the lake when on a family vacation! He said it most lovingly and I Was supposed to be paddling the canoe. I am anxious to read this book, it sounds powerful. Not one where I know the ending after reading the 1st chapter. I have never heard of this author or of this author. I am a big fan of all Susan Meissner’s books (I taught her son !) And I love to learn of other talented authors!

9 Years ago, my best friend was in a car crash while pregnant with her first child. Her husband died immediately in the crash that day. My friend remained alive, but was in a coma. 6 months later, she gave birth to their son while still in a coma. I was pregnant with my third child at the same time and her younger sister, had given birth to her own child 6 days prior to the crash. We both have such bittersweet memories of that time. We had our own children to love and care for, but were grieving the loss of our best friend. My best friend’s sister and her husband took care of her son from the first day he was born and adopted him at a later date in time. My friend never woke up from her coma, but her son had 5 years to get to know his mum, and we think that in some way she knew who he was when he would visit. Tears would stream down her face at the mention of his name. She passed 5 years to the exact day that her husband had in the original car accident. I believe it was a sign from God that he took her home on that exact day to be with him, and hopefully her husband, as well. He son was also old enough to remember his mum, which was another blessing:) I am looking forward to reading this book and buying another copy for my best friend’s sister to read. I think we both will be able to relate well to your main character, even though the storyline is not the same! Thank you so much for all the great giveaways, would love to have a kindle to read your book.

When I moved to a new neighborhood, I started a book club so I could get to know my neighbors. When the selections they wanted to read all became too graphic, silly, or romantic stuff, I opted out and joined a bible study. Now, with books like these on the market, I can once again begin a book club and perhaps help lead some women to God through amazing stories such as these. Thanks.

I just came through a Watershed Year of my own, struggling with a prodigal son, addiction, guilt and the loss of hope that grief can bring. I understand how tragic if feels to not be able to express your love before it is too late, to be paralyzed by the fear of rejection and judgement. Blessedly, I am a testament to God’s promise to work all for good, to bring us goodness. My Watershed Year grew my infantile faith with bounds that I would never have thought possible. I understnad now what it means to have atrue relationship with God, to love and trust him. I cannot wait to read the story!

My question is how do you not fear when you feel responsible for all your own problems – the anxieties aren’t from the outside but all from the inside. I put it all in God’s hands but my hands still feel powerless, or are they?

Trusting God is completely letting go of our own expectations. It’s an ongoing process to “Let Go, Let God”, it is humbling. But if I don’t, I’ll keep burying the treasures He has stored up for me. I want to start finding those treasures, and be at peace with His graces.

How ’bout we all welcome a little peace and happiness into our lives today! Amen

I am so blessed by everything that Proverbs 31 Women do & I look forward to reading A Watershed Year. I thank God for this ministry because it is for all women. I will be 70 in August & my husband retired from our pastorate in Houston last May. It was my privilege to have Lysa TerKeurst & Renee Swope to come speak to the women in our church two years ago. What a blessing!!

I read my daily “encouragement for today” email, with hopes of lifting my spirits and my faith. I can honestly say that God is calling me and fulfilling me in every way that I need. I have been on a journey with truly excepting Jesus as my rock and savior. He brought my faith to were it is now, just in time for what I am now going through. My best friend was just diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer and had to deliver her baby girl at 31 weeks to begin treatment on her cancer. The baby is doing wonderful, but I have so much fear and sadness for my friend. I think about this all the time and it never leaves me. I can feel the weight of this pressing down on my mood and my faith. I woke up this morning knowing I needed a change and I am putting my faith into Christ.. I am letting him take this burden from me, so that I can be the faith filled friend that my friend will need. The Encouragement for today about fear was the most perfect thing I could have read, and on top of that the link to this page fits even more perfectly. Just yesterday I passed a book store and decided Id go there today and find a good book so I was hoping that the suggested book today would be something fitting. The book a watershed year is about a woman who loses her best friend and raises an adopted baby. This is so unbelievable.. There couldn’t have been a more perfect book if the Lord called me by name!! I am going to buy this book.. God wants me to read it. This may very well be my life to come.. I will be helping raise my dear friends daughter. Thank you Lord for bringing me here.. you know what I need, you are unbelievable and always there when I ask for you. I LOVE YOU!!!!

Allison, I had to make a comment after reading your Proverbs 31 devotional for today. For the past month God has been impressing upon my heart and mind to start a new blog and be consistent. And it’s about FEAR. I want to have a “FEARLESS” heart, one that serves God, that trusts in God and is courageous. I was finally obedient this past Saturday and set it up to start writing/posting daily what God is teaching me about growing a fearless heart. Your devotional is the encouragement and affirmation I needed today. Thanks so much! Deborah P.S. Can’t wait to read The Watershed Year too!

Last night during my quiet time with God I was convicted to stop watching tv shows and reading books that don’t glorify God. Too many shows and books are immersed in immoral and ungodly themes making us less shocked by them and more accepting of them as we become desensitized. I love reading and as soon as I felt God lead me in this my first thought was, “How in the world am I going to know what books to get now?” since I usually just go to the library and randomly pick books that look interesting. Then this morning the first thing I read was my devotion from Proverbs 31 Ministry leading me to your site. A book site with recommendations from Christian women!! How amazing is God to answer my prayer immediately for something so small as to what books should I read? I am so excited to have been led to your site and can’t wait to get reading the books you recommend! ….and winning a Kindle would make it even more exciting! :)

Sometimes all we can see is the circumstances, that’s when fear sets in. We are overwhelmed but we are not alone…God is always there and He will not leave us…no matter what. I have been that chld who is afraid of the dark, and cried out for “Daddy”. Thank you Lord (Daddy) for being with me during my darkest hour(s) and for trusting you and not what I see.

Today’s devotion struck very close to me – Faith vs. Fear. There have been many times that I could not distinguish the two words apart. How were YOU able to tell them apart – especially during your trials? What prayers can I say so that I can have faith and not fear the unknown. How do I release my fears? Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you for today’s devotion. God Bless.

I am so glad I found this group, website, book and today’s devotion on Proverbs 31 Ministries! I am currently struggling with fear and desperatly trying to turn it into faith. My sister is struggling with alchol and drug addiction, has 2 children and a terribly abusive husband. I know God has a plan for her and her family, but the worry still creeps in and turns to fear. My other sister and I are desperately trying to calm the anxiety of our elderly father as he struggles with is own fears over this terrible situation. Any prayers that can be offered for my struggling family are truly appreciated! God Bless you all!

When I least expect it, He speaks. Sadly, I’m not always paying attention. Today I was. Death is never convenient for any of us – losing a loved one can paralyze us in ways we don’t even realize. Susan’s book sounds as if it speaks of overcoming the paralysis of loss and learning life can still hold love.

It is wonderful you are giving away not only the Kindle version of Susan’s novel, but paper copies as well. I look forward to reading A Watershed Year.

I can sympothize with your story. I, too, was told that my daughter who is now nine would not make it through the night. When she was born the valve that lets blood go to the lungs to get oxygen did not open so all the blood backed up into the right atrium of her heart making it swell enormously. I have never been more scared in my life and even though I was not serving God at the time, fortunately I knew a lot of people who were and that’s the first thing I did was start calling people who I knew were Christians.

I am so thankful that my daughter only had to stay in the hospital a total of seven days and she has never had to have any kind of surgery or be on any type of medication. God truely is a miracle worker and I cherish every moment I have with my little girl.

Today’s devotion touched my heart, too. It seems most of my fears revolved around my daughter, though those aren’t the only ones. I’m in an odd season of my life where I’m unsure of, and yes, afraid of so much. But I’m spending time with Him every day and I’m beginning to hear His promises. He was always promising but I wasn’t always listening!

Would love to win the Kindle. I’m going to read this book whether I win it or not! :)

The novel, Watershed Year, sounds intriguing and more so when I read an excerpt. The characters seem to need to find a grounding faith in God and I am sure the death of a dear friend and then venturing into adoption are daunting events that should bring enlightment and deepening faith. I would be so honored to be able to enjoy this book with any other prize that may bring enjoyment to my spirit.

Thanks for the whole Proverbs 31 ministry. All you ladies are very inspirational! This book sounds like it would be a wonderful read. I’m going through a lot of feelings right now, faith and fear among them, related to the very recent loss of my father (March 23rd) while still dealing with the loss of my mother (January 5, 2010). And having been a foster mom for 30 babies, mostly newborns, the adoption element of this story really appeals to me. Thanks for this opportunity! May God continue to bless your ministry.

God is working in my life right now on just learning how to BE and not to DO!! As He does often, through a devotional at Proverbs 31 I was led here. He has placed reading on my heart as a means to calm my spirit and focus on Him and the truths in His word. So excited to find a place to combine the two!! Just signed up for your monthly newsletter as well. Excited to see him work in this area!! God bless you and this ministry for women!! Thank you for your willing heart!

I cannot wait to read this book! I feel that I have always been destined for motherhood myself. My children are my world! I hope that this book will provide additional insite into the real meaning of “Mommy”. Sometimes I think we get so caught up in the everyday caretaker responsibilities of being a mother that we forget to “stop and smell the roses”. Being the mother of a child with special needs has made me appreciate life’s little blessings. I hope that this book will help others who are struggling with the daily routine see the “rainbows” I have learned to seek.

As an adopted child, I grew up knowing that “mom” is not just a biological title then when my mom passed away two years ago while I was in college, I learned again that moms are everywhere, always loving and always there to pick you up.

Can’t wait to read this book! (Even better if it’s on a new Kindle!) I work with families of infants and young children and this kind of book calls to my soul. It’s always good “training” to learn more about the lives and struggles of families with children who have special needs.

I cannot remember NOT having a book in my hand; reading has been THAT important to me. I am amazed at what I have learned/what God has taught me through those thousands of books, and how He always draws me deeper. It is the power of the story and the power of the lesson that pushes me to share those books with friends, neighbors, co-workers, and complete strangers. I am sure they all thought I was a nut when I first bombarded them with “the best book I’ve ever read!”, but without fail, they have become as smitten as I.

    So, here I go again….
This is one book I can’t wait to open!
    Thank you for sharing!

This book is definitely a must-read, I’m so excited to get myself a copy in the near future! I barely got through the excerpt and first paragraph of the description without tears in my eyes; it’s such a powerful story and I know it will truly touch my heart as a woman and as a mother.

I’m reading a chapter a day in Jan’s latest Father Tim book and I need to find a new fiction author to start reading. I will have to find a copy of Watershed to read when I finish Father Tim and Cynthia. Thanks for the info on what sounds to be a great read!

A Watershed Year – that completely speaks to the female heart, what a great title! It looks not only like a great new release, but a great ‘emotional release’ as well. I am definitely interested in purchasing the book for a family member, who actually adopted a boy named ‘Matt’ from Russia…….and then I will hope to be able to read it myself on a new Kindle ;) Thank you!

  638. Judy Pond April 13, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

I can’t wait to read this story. I know what it is like to have things left unsaid with my parents after each of them died. There’s never enough time to say everything we want to say, but it fills one with regret afterwards. There is no longer an opportunity after death. I’ve struggled with this for years….I look forward to seeing in the story how it is dealt with. Thank you!

  639. Lydia April 13, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Thanks for the recommendation! Just downloaded the book sample from Amazon. The built in dictionary and the ablility to download a sample of any book before purchasing are just 2 of my favorite things about my Kindle!

Looking forward to reading this book. I read one of the recent books recommended, “The Mailbox,” and it was as if the author took the story straight from my life. That book renewed my passion for reading, which dwindled after I fell into a deep depression. It also brought hope back into my life.

If not for SheReads.org, I’m sure most of you would never have noticed my book among the 8 million on Amazon or the hundreds of thousands in any book store. I’m truly grateful for the chance to connect with readers and share the story of Lucy’s “Watershed Year.”

What a touching story. I can’t wait to read it. I am also one who does so much better with the written word vs. the spoken word and so I can relate and think that what Harlan gives her through those posts is a great gift.
