September Book Club Selection

397 Comments 07 September 2010

Welcome to those of you stopping in from today’s Proverbs 31 Ministries devotion. We are delighted to announce this month’s featured book club selection, Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner! As always, we have a lovely giveaway to go along with our announcement. The first place winner will receive a copy of Lady in Waiting, this leather-bound book of Puritan Prayers, a beaded bookmark, and – are you ready for this – the antique ring on the cover of Lady in Waiting! (All courtesy of the generous staff at Waterbrook Press) Two additional winners will each receive a copy of the novel. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post or sign up for our free monthly e-newsletter. Winners will be chosen Wednesday, September 15th.

Love is a choice you make every day.

Content in her comfortable marriage of twenty-two years, Jane Lindsay had never expected to watch her husband,  Brad, pack his belongings and walk out the door of their Manhattan home. But when it happens, she feels powerless to stop him and the course of events that follow Brad’s departure.

Jane finds an old ring in a box of relics from a British jumble sale and discovers a Latin inscription in the band along with just one recognizable word: Jane. Feeling an instant connection to the mysterious ring bearing her namesake, Jane begins a journey to learn more about the ring–and perhaps about herself.

~

In the sixteenth-century, Lucy Day becomes the dressmaker to Lady Jane Grey, an innocent young woman whose fate seems to be controlled by a dangerous political and religious climate, one threatening to deny her true love and pursuit of her own interests.

As the stories of both Janes dovetail through the journey of one ring, it becomes clear that each woman has far more influence over her life than she once imagined. It all comes down to the choices each makes despite the realities they face.

You can download and read the first four chapters of Lady in Waiting here.

Susan Meissner has spent her lifetime as a writer, starting with her first poem at the age of four. She is the award-winning author of The Shape of Mercy, White Picket Fences, and many other novels. When she’s not writing, she directs the small groups and connection ministries at her San Diego church. She and her pastor husband are the parents of four young adults.

I would be thrilled to win just the book but to have a chance at not only the book but a Puritan prayer journal and beaded bookmark is a huge win in itself and to add “the antique ring” makes this package an unbelievable treasure. How exciting for a chance to be included in the story by owning “The Ring”.

Susan Meissner has a wonderful style of writing that makes you feel as if you are apart of the story and most certainly deserves to be chosen as one of 2010′s She Reads (a ministry of Proverbs 31) book club books!

I just learned of this website from Sue Meissner herself and my eyes got as big as saucers when she shared about the gorgeous and msyterious ring on the cover. I love her books and cannot put them down once I start – she draws you into the story and characters so quickly that I really believe they are real people I’d love to meet.

  27. Tricia Wright says:

I have always been an avid reader. I finished Gone with the Wind in the 6th grade! Reading and writing are a passion of mine. I have to say when I decided to give my Life for the One that laid down His life, I thought for sure I wouldn’t have anything good to read. Self help and inspirational books are great and I thought that is where I would have to stay. Ficition I thought would be cheesy and boring. I have been greatly and delightfully mistaken! I would love to win this book and be introduced to another Author and if I don’t, I will make a trip to the library or book store! Thanks for the opportunity to win but more importantly for bringing great books to our attention.

  28. Michele says:

Sounds intriguing and something that I would like to read.

I participate in a book club through my church. We’ve not only bonded over our love of reading but our hearts have been woven together through the sharing of our hearts too. I’m an avid reader but have not read anything by Susan Meissner. Maybe my first experience will be with my very own copy of Lady in Waiting, won through your contest. Either way, I plan to introduce her to our group.

  34. Thanks for all your wonderful, affirming comments! You are the reason I write. . .

  36. Clair says:

I would so love a chance at getting the book. I have read all of Meissner’s books and would love this one.

  37. Maryiva says:

I am new to Proverbs31 Minitries and SheReads as well. I am thoroughly enjoying all the discoveries and wonderful informaton as well as encouragement from both sites. I would love to win the book “Lady in Waiting” along with the other items! What a wonderful beginning into my new found avenue of Christian Fiction. I am excited! Be blessed in God:)

  38. Leah says:

‘The Shape of Mercy’ was such a beautifully written story. Susan Meissner is a brilliant storyteller. There are so few author’s whose books I will purchase based solely upon the author. Susan is an exception … There are so many wonderful “gems” to be found w/in the pages of her stories. And those book covers … wow! So now, her newest release, ‘Lady in Waiting’ … loved it! I actually bought a copy for my history teacher from my College days. She is going to love this story! We spent many weeks talking about this very lady whom Susan features in her story — so cool! Best wishes to you, Susan on what’s sure to be another successful story! Blessings, Leah

  39. Nancy Reid says:

I love this site and am an avid fiction reader…a book a day keeps the tv away.

  40. Momma Mindy says:

I am so thankful for Susan’s writing ministry. May the Lord use this book for His glory and honor.

  41. Ari says:

Prayer is one my favorite things to do, but I don’t keep a journal of them.
I have foolishly thought that I will always remember, keep a mental journal, of all of the prayers God has answered in my life, and….. guess what? I don’t remember all of them. I become sad, and try to exercise my brain to remember as many as I can!!! I tell myself this is good for my brain also, and although it may be, I “kick” myself for not being more disciplined in keeping a prayer journal. I’d love to win the journal. I know that it will serve as a MOTIVATOR, looking at its beautiful pages to records God’s blessings of prayers answered and blessings showered upon us and all those for whom we pray! :-)

  42. Diana says:

I hope i can win this book. It look interesting, and i will like to find more inside. Looking forward to see my name on the win list.

  43. Annette Dyer says:

I am a new comer to the site, just reading about the sight , I am sure this is something I would like to be a part of. Winning the gift set would be a plus.

    Thank God Bless
