She Reads March Selection

by ariel on February 28, 2010

Welcome to those of you stopping in from our Proverbs 31 devotion today. You’re just in time to hear the announcement of our March book club selection.

We’ve been waiting for the opportunity to feature a book by this gifted author, and her newest release proved to be exactly the kind of novel that makes us stand up and cheer. Please give a warm welcome (and a round of applause) to the lovely and talented, Christa Parrish! Her second novel, Watch Over Me, is this month’s book club selection.

Her rescue might be the miracle they needed…

Things like this don’t happen in Beck County.

Deputy Benjamin Patil is the one to find the infant girl, hours old, abandoned in a field.

As police work to identify the mother, Ben and his wife, Abbi, seem like the obvious couple to serve as foster parents. But the newborn’s arrival opens old wounds for Abbi and shines a harsh light on how much Ben has changed since a devastating military tour.

Their marriage teeters on the brink, and now they must choose to reclaim what they once had or lose each other forever.

You can read the first two chapters of Watch Over Me here.

Christa Parrish graduated high school at 16, with every intention of becoming a Christa Parrish Mar 09surgeon. After college, however, her love of all things creative led her in another direction, and she worked in both theatre and journalism.

A winner of Associated Press awards for her reporting, Christa gave up her career after the birth of her son, Jacob. She continued to write from home, doing pro bono work for the New York Family Policy Council, where her articles appeared in Focus on the Family’s Citizen magazine. She was also a finalist in World magazine’s WORLDview short story contest, sponsored by WestBow press. She now teaches literature and writing to high school students, is a homeschool mom, and lives with her husband, author Christ Coppernoll, and son in upstate New York, where she is at work on her third novel.

We’re delighted to give away two copies of Christa’s novel, along with this hand made vase inspired by Abbi Patil, one of the main characters in Watch Over Me. Our grand prize winner will receive both the vase and a novel. And a second winner will get a copy of Watch Over Me.

wwm_4971You can enter to win by leaving a comment on this post, signing up for our monthly newsletter, or subscribing to our RSS feed. Winners will be drawn at the end of the week.

This poignant and powerful novel establishes Christa Parrish as one of the most talented new voices to emerge in Christian fiction. We encourage each of you to spend a few hours with this book and get to know characters so real you’ll miss them when you turn the last page.

Good luck to each of you. Thanks for spending a little time with us today, and we hope you come back on a regular basis.

I am so glad that I read my Proverbs 31 post today. To learn that we are this way or that way was meant to be by God, Himself, is comforting and encouraging. Being ourselves and being comfortable with ourselves is beyond important. It is obeying God’s wishes.
Thank you so much.

I met Christa Parrish at ICRS several years ago, and am thrilled to see how her writing career has taken off. Her new novel sounds wonderful – can’t wait to read it!

This devotional was exactly what I needed to hear today as I was continuing to try and shape myself into something that I am not. Thank you, Father for designing me just the way You wanted me.

Thank you for the book recommendation as well. I am always searching for new encouraging books to read and can’t wait to get this one too.

Thank you all, dear friends in Christ, for the encouragement to me, as I see the devotional the Lord gave me to write has encouraged some of you! I have to say, after writing this devotional, I have such respect for the women at Proverbs 31 women who work every day for all of us, helping us to be inspired in the Lord. What a tremendous ministry :)

May God bless all of us as we strive to be who He made us to be!

I am so excited to see that you’ve showcased this book! Christa is one of the most talented Christian writers that I’ve had the pleasure of reading! I’m so excited to see what she comes out with next!

11 Brandy March 2, 2010 at 10:23 am

This looks like a wonderful book! Christa’s 1st novel was excellent, and I can’t wait to read this one as well.

12 Amanda March 2, 2010 at 10:48 am

The devotion today was well needed. It is so comforting when you are going through something in your life that gets you down and how God knows what you need at just the right time. I think sometimes it feels awful to be set apart, even if it is only for a season, but I love going back to the word because it is so encouraging. I am not set apart because of anything I have done or what I feel like at the moment, God has set me apart because he has a plan for my life and he loves me!! He is an awesome God! Thanks for the encouragement today!

Oh, how many times I have longed to “fit in”. The stronger my relationship grows and the smaller my “religion” gets, the more I accept who I am. Thanks for a great devotion today!

14 Amy March 2, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Sounds like a great book!

15 Melanie March 2, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Really Enjoyed the devotion on Proverbs 31 today. Your words spoke acceptance of who God made me to be, rather than the struggle to be someone I am not, and was not mean to be. Thanks.

I had never heard of Christa Parrish before….so I am now looking forward to reading her books! I just started receiving Proverbs 31 Ministries daily devotions. And I must say, they are a blessing to me for I am a busy stay at home mom of 5 children! The devotions have been an answer to prayer to have God’s word brought to me in such an easy, quick and simple way yet fulfilling and inspirational. So thank you for doing what you’re doing :)

17 Cookie March 2, 2010 at 2:43 pm

A sister (co-worker) shared this information with me. The concept is true of how we often time try to fit in. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any material from Christa – I hope I win the book this will be a good start. Be continually blessed!

18 Ellen S. March 2, 2010 at 2:53 pm

19 Sue Reutzel March 2, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I came over from Rachel Olsen’s blog…she asked if we like to read fiction…I sure could use a good read after all the studying and I love a good mystery and do not get enough chances…Look forward to reading it…

20 Mary Chandler March 2, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Christa is an outstanding author. Her first book was riveting, and I’ve no doubt this one is as well. I look forward to reading it.

21 Nancy March 2, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Looking forward to reading this new book by Christa. I eagerly read the devotions each day… thanks for writing such great devotions!

22 Angela March 2, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Christa-

Your personal story is full of working towards what you enjoy doing most. This is a lesson I work hard to “teach” to the girls in my care. As their teacher, I have worked hard to instill the belief that they were created for a purpose and they are to work hard to fulfill that purpose. Your story is one I hope to share!

23 Pam March 2, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Love the She Reads site and book suggestions. Would love a chance to win this book : )

24 Shelley March 2, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Thanks Christa for today’s devotional. I must admit I still find myself doing this very thing. Trying to be somebody I am not. Trying to fit into somebody else’s mold and finding it a bit difficult to breathe. Similar to trying to squeeze into a pair of too- tight jeans and all but cutting off my circulation! Thank you again for reminding me to be just me. Exactly the way God designed!

25 Cindy Woolard March 3, 2010 at 4:58 am

Wonderful devotion.
Would love to be entered into your drawing.

God bless you,

43 MH March 5, 2010 at 8:00 am

Your message really spoke to me. Thank you. I have spent many years feeling not good enough to fit in with my fellow church goers. At 50 I am just realizing that I’m ok and God can use me how I am.

44 Sheila Waller March 5, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I am thankful for the “She Reads” website. I am part of a woman’s bookclub and this is a great resource for material. I do not have to worry when I bring one of your books to the table that I might be surprised by the message or the language. Thank you.

45 Ms. Sam Friend March 5, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Today’s message is something I continually try to instill in my boys. God has created each one of us in His image…unique creatures. We need to be true to who we are created to be because if you go against the grain you will be miserable.

46 Yvonne Templeton March 6, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I can’t wait to read Christa Parrish’s new book, as well as the other books that I read about in the selections section. All of them sound absolutely intriguing. I am a newcomer to this site, and I am so glad that I was led to it. Proverbs 31 devotions and encouragement for women was just what I needed. Thank you.
