Welcome to those of you stopping by from our Proverbs 31 Ministries Devotion. You couldn’t have found a better place to talk books, revel in stories, and meet authors who are changing the world one novel at a time.
And one of those authors is Tom Davis. His novel, SCARED, is a She Reads winter selection. One of the things we love about Tom is that he doesn’t just write about challenging situations, he lives them. As President of Children’s Hopechest (and co-founder of Saints Coffee), he spends a large part of the year on the ground in Africa with thousands of children who have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
His debut novel, SCARED, was inspired by a young girl he met in Swaziland.

Stuart Davis has hit bottom. Once a celebrated and award-winning photojournalist, he is now reeling from debt, a broken marriage, and a crippling depression. The source of Stuart’s grief is his most famous photo: a snapshot of brutality in the dangerous Congo. A haunting image that indicts him as a passive witness to gross injustice.
Stuart is given one last chance to redeem his career: a make-or-break assignment covering the AIDS crisis in a small African country. It is here that Stuart meets Adanna, a young orphan fighting for survival in a community ravaged by tragedy and disease. But in the face of overwhelming odds, Adanna finds hope in a special dream, where she is visited by an illuminated man and given a precious gift.
Now, a dark place that’s a world away from home, Stuart will once again confront the harsh reality of suffering people in a forgotten land. And as a chance encounter becomes divine providence, two very different people will find their lives forever changed.
You can read the first chapter of SCARED here.
We are giving away three copies of SCARED, along with a journal similar to the one used by Adanna in the novel. And the wonderful folks at Saints Coffee will send each of our winners a pound of fresh roasted coffee (roast and flavor of their choice).

If you’d like to take these goodies home, then all you have to do is leave a comment on this post or sign up for our monthly newsletter. Our first place winner will get the journal, a copy of SCARED, and a pound of Saints Coffee. Our second and third place winners will each receive the novel and the coffee.
A while back we had the chance to sit down with Tom Davis and learn a little about the inspiration for SCARED.
One of the main characters in your novel, a twelve year old AIDS orphan named Adanna, was inspired by a real child. Can you tell us a little about the real Adanna and how she compelled you to write this novel?
The idea of Adanna does stem from a real girl I met in Swaziland who was twelve years old at the time. She was a gorgeous little girl filled with life. Her joy was contagious and she just loved being around our group, hugging on various team members and playing games with us in the field. Both of her parents had died from AIDS and she was taken in by her uncle. Sadly, she became a slave for him and his family. Neighbors complained to the authorities that she was being abused and she was removed from the home. The only issue she struggled with besides being shy when she arrived at the orphanage, was one of incontinence. They thought the poor thing had never been potty trained. They took her to the doctor to find out what was wrong. The truth was almost unbelievable. Her incontinence was a result of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her uncle and other men he had sold her to. I walked around the rest of that day in tears. I couldn’t believe someone would treat a child is such an evil way. Then those kinds of stories became more of the norm for me on the trip. The Adannas in Africa are real kids, with dreams and hopes of a good future. A future that won’t exist unless the body of Christ gets involved in their lives.

Though this novel was hard to read in many places, one of the things I appreciated most about it was that you did not pull your punches. You unflinchingly portrayed suffering and heartbreak while weaving in mercy and hope. How did you find that balance? And did you struggle personally while telling this story?
It was quite difficult. I wanted to write a story that was honest. It is graphic in places but I can assure you that orphans in Africa and around the world experience things much worse than what you read on those pages. That was one of the most difficult realities for me to swallow as I researched and wrote the book. Thinking about the abuse millions of innocent children go through every single day is a frightening truth. There came a point in the story when I couldn’t let one more terrible thing happen to Adanna. Originally, I wanted a scene in the book where Adanna was forced to sell her body in order to feed her younger brother and sister. It happens all the time in Africa. But I couldn’t do it.
While reading SCARED I was struck by the characters – not just how real they were, but how they could be any of the people in my life. Which character do you relate to the most? Why?
Stuart, without a doubt. He is me in many ways. My story is the story of a man searching for meaning in life and finding it the eyes of orphans. I think deep inside each one of us is a desire to help suffering children. It’s how God made us! Our hearts should break with compassion for the Adannas in the world. Even though Stuart has had great success in his life, he struggles to live with significance. Don’t we all to some degree? Of course raising godly children and loving our spouses is our first priority. But how can we invest our lives in ‘least of these’ Jesus talks about in Matthew 25? Their is so much eternal impact that comes from feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. That’s my journey and Stuart’s too!
All fiction carries a message – something the author wants the audience to wrestle with. When readers turn the last page of Scared, what do you want them to take away?
“We need the poor more than the poor need us.” Yes, Jesus wants us to care for the poor and love our neighbors as ourselves. But I need to love the broken and care for the afflicted, not because I’m Biblically bound, but because it’s what I was created to do. It’s what makes me the most alive.
I was particularly fond of the character Pastor Walter. He runs the care point in Adanna’s village and does all he can to make a difference. Have you encountered a few real Pastor Walter’s on your travels? How have they impacted your ministry? Your writing?
The Pastor Walters of the world are my heroes and heroines. In every country I’ve been too, I’ve found incredible people who are changing the world around them. Most of them are poor themselves, they don’t have anything to offer except their lives. Then God takes them, just as they are, and uses them for something great. I have to tell you that most of these people are women. Grandmother’s in Russia, “Go-go’s” in Africa who literally carry their communities on their backs. They are the Mother Teresa’s of the world for me. I’m humbled by their commitment and courage to live by faith and trust God to use the little that’s in their hands.
Thanks for hanging out with us today. We’re glad you’re here. We hope you come back. And good luck to all of you entering our marvelous giveaway! Books and coffee, what more could you want?

It would be an honor to receive a copy of this book. I think reality hit us all when the pictures hit the news after the Haiti earthquake and all the devastation afterwards. Most people did not know of the poverty or the religious beliefs in that country until then. I live in royalty here in the US compared to what I have learned through Compassion International where I am sponsoring a little girl from the Philippines. And how easy is it for us to “doubt” God and his existance! I can not imagine living in poverty, pray I never do, but hope that I would never forget our Lord and know that he does exists. The book looks very entertaining and will enjoy reading it soon.
Sounds like a ‘must read!’ God bless!
Wow – the book, journal and coffee look yummy!
Can’t wait to read the entire book!
I can’t wait to read this book. I have been to Africa once and I left my heart there. Thank you for what you are doing for these beautiful people.

Hi Ariel ~ very inspirational devotion about Mercy over at Proverbs 31 Encouragement for Today – thank you for the “nudge” and, also, thank you for bringing Tom’s book to the forfront. Mercy in action. Just recently I was looking at his book to read – thank you for offering this give-away.
I feel so far away and removed from this kind of pain. Thank you for being a voice for God’s loved ones. I commit to pray for them.
Cathy
The Lord knows how to pack a punch. I’m dealing with a messy family situation and mercy is the last thing I want to give. Thanks for this devotional.

Wow, this seems like a truly amazaing read. The first chapter had me hooked. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us. I feel so bad for those children over there in Africa. I will continue to ask God for healing in the land!
This book sounds like a very moving story that, although it is fiction, is more true than many of us could ever imagine. As such, I would feel honored to receive this book so that I may learn more about the plight of these orphans.
What an inspirational book – I looked at the Youtube clip and I can’t wait to read the book.. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
God bless you. Anne.
wow, I must read this…sounds great and I LOVE reading!
I was very inspired by the the Prologue and had goosebumps as I read page 13…..Wow, is all I can say. I would love to see what is in store for Stuart as he contends with having done nothing to having a second chance. Tom DAvis, I believe you have a real winner here.
I deeply respect and admire all that Tom Davis and his team are doing – being the hands and feet for those of us who are unable to care for the orphans and widows of this world. My prayers are with the whole team, who desperately need them. Thanks for posting and I can’t wait to read his book!
I can’t wait to read this book. We have a spending freeze going on at our house right now so I can’t just go buy it yet…sure hope I win it. the struggles in Africa are appaling and we are so far removed from them we cannot even imagine. And yet some of the same kinds of pain occur in our own country as we sit idly by…
I am interested in this book. I like that it is based on facts. At first glance I thought the name of it was “SACRED”.
Wow..>I would love to read this book. We adopted our daughter from China 10 months ago. I’m familiar with Tom Davis and he is the real deal. Very inspiring.
SCARED sounds like a compelling story.
i’d love to read this while cozied up with a cup of saints coffee!
My Mom was a missionary in Africa for 9 years. I look forward to reading SACRED.
All of us need a Savior, all of us are orphans until Christ brought us to the Father. I would enjoy these gifts and am Grateful for all your work in making these gifts possible. Thanks Tom Davies for all your work and care, God’s blessings.
After reading Proverbs 31 Women devo, on mercy.. I was genuinely touched by this story also, to tears. I love children.. and they all deserve compassion and mercy. How atrocious, but enlightening to those of us who are so “comfortable” in this country. God Bless you for shedding light on such a heartwrenching topic.
When I read the post I was intrigued, so I took the time to read the first chapter. The words seemed to jump of the page and form vivid images as if I had been viewing photographs. I had goosebumps reading it and my heart cried! I applaud Mr. Davis for sharing his experience with the world and writing a novel. Sometimes we keep them in little boxes we want to keep hidden, but when we listen to the voice of God and the Holy spirit moves the very core of our soul, those sad and difficult moments become beautiful, inspiring gifts that touch the hearts of others. That to me is what I see in Scared and would be blessed for the opportunity to finish reading it and making it the first book in the women’s book club I’m in the process of forming.
May God continue to Bless Proverbs 31 Ministries , SheReads, and Mr. Tom Davis.
I love books, but I don’t really read much beyond blogs. The result is I have a lovely & colourful stack of books in pristine condition b/c I’ve never cracked them open. “Scared,” however, might just by the one to break this cycle!
How wonderful to see a book that addresses some of the real life pain and victories that are prevailent in our world. So often we want to look away but this book inspires and challenges us to not only look at the problems but find a way to help. Thank you Mr. Davies.
Thank God for His mercy and sacrifice and for allowing His mercy and sacrifice to dwell within each of us, and thank you for sharing your story, that it may stir that desire in us to be more merciful, more compassionate and more sacrificial with the very life He has given us. May God continue to bless you with His undying riches.
I am looking forward to reading this book!
Sounds like a powerful book!
Wow this book sounds wonderful! Thanks for today’s devotional!
I am very much looking forward to reading this book. Our world needs such inspiration as Tom Davis offers us. I pray that Children’s Hopechest and Saints Coffee continue to be successful in their efforts!
I’d love to dive into this book. Looks inspiring!
The book and the works in general sound interesting and inspiring. During these past weeks, hearing about the Haiti earthquake, I felt that there was something I must do. I knew I couldn’t physically help, but I could give a donation and offer many prayers to those who were experiencing it first hand and those who were helping with the relief efforts. I searched and found the Samaritan’s Purse (an organization created by Franklin Graham). Myself along with my family got together to send that love donation.
We must show mercy to others and help out whenever possible instead of turning the other cheek. I love lending that helping hand; not for myself, but for those in need.
God bless you Tom with you book and hopefully I will have the opportunity to read it soon.
I’m new to She Reads. This looks like a great book!
Sounds like an awesome book! Africa is such an amazing place, but with so much poverty and heartache.
First time visiting this website and WOW! This sounds like a great book, one I would love to read…and what better to pair with a good book? A great cup of coffee!
It looks like such a great read. How wonderful!
This sounds like an amazing novel! I would love an opportunity to read it and share it with others. My heart aches so many times for the children in all the countries around the world that do not have water or food or who do not feel safe in their current place of residence. Thank you for posting the devotion at proverbs31. I needed to read that today!
What a wonderful work Tom does. And the book sounds great! I would love to win so please enter my name!
I hope to read the book soon. I hope I win – so please enter my name!
This book sounds like a must-read. The reality of war-torn, impoverished worlds hit home with the recent pictures of Haiti. I had no idea!! I also didn’t know how many Haitian people are living in my home state of GA. I was reading this week in the Christian Index about the many Haitian Baptist Churches in our state. Again, I had no idea. I read, I watch the news, yet I am beginning to feel like I’ve been living under a rock. Thank you for your work and God Bless!!
Susan Stephens
Seems like a compelling, life-changing read. I can’t wait to dive into this book.
I am new to She Reads and just learned about the book Scared. I am really looking forward to reading it.
I recently returned (3 days ago) from a two-week stint in Zambia Africa. I went with a team of 9 from my church with the purpose of sharing with and encouraging the workers and children in an AIDS affected/infected orphanage run by Seeds of Hope Ministries. Oh my goodness…how can you explain it… I still cannot talk about it much less think about it with dry eyes. We saw so much; so much despair and poverty – yet we saw so much hope. God is working ihn Africa through His people – His own in Africa and around the world. We were so incredibly blessed to begin relationships with children who have experienced first had what it is to be picked up from the rubble and be placed on the Father’s lap. I will be sponsoring one of the young girls I had the privilege to eat supper with and spend time with. Now that I am home, I don’t want to go back to same old same old. I know that that is what will happen unless I continue to cry God’s tears for the lost and dying. My goal is to keep that heart fresh by keeping current and reading, reading, reading the stories of those to whom it is real life.
This sounds like an excellent book, and what an amazing man! The devotional today really touched me. Thanks for making me think today…making me look inside a little deeper about what mercy means.
I am intrigued by the book, would love to read it. The journal is beautiful. And I love coffee! I am clearly a great choice, ha! Thanks for the chance.
Thank you for the opportunities that you provide through Proverbs 31 ministries. I am amazed at the blessings you pour out to your subscribers. Thank you again.
