She Reads Saturday

by ariel on October 17, 2009

Whenever I visit someone’s home (or office), I always peek at their bookshelf. You can tell a lot about a person by the type of books they read. So I thought it would be fun to give you a quick look at a few of the titles on the She Reads review shelf.

Our Winter selections have been chosen, and the She Reads committee is hard at work  reading and reviewing books for Spring and Summer. That said, here are a few of the books that have captured our attention recently:

I’m reading “The Potluck Club Trouble’s Brewing” and I love it. It is the second book in the series. I also REALLY enjoyed the Ashley Stockingdale novels by Kristin Billerbeck starting with “What a Girl Wants”.

Ha! I am reading these exact same books! What are the odds?? :)

Seriously, I have a sickness. I have this need to know not only what is on people’s bookshelves (you can learn a lot about someone that way) but also when I am on a plane I have this urge to see what people are reading. It’s weird and I know it.

I just finished reading “Love Comes Softly” by Janette Oke. I had not read any of these series before and I was capitavated! I was pleased that it was not just a typical romance but something much deeper. I even found a few treasures (quotes) that I need to write on a note card and hang around my home! I’m also reading Hook by Stephen Lawhead.

Just finished reading it today, actually, and I loved, loved, loved “Never the Bride” !!! Can’t wait to see the movie (praying it comes through).

Well I have been totally bored with most recent fiction so I decided to read some of the Classics. I just finished The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. It was an interesting book…an old theme, man loves unattainable woman but really if he obtained said woman, he would have been disappointed. Meanwhile he is married to a woman who loves him very much…reminded me a bit of Scarlett OHara, Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler. I will read more by Ms Wharton.

I’m reading “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. Actually, I just got it today and will begin in just a few moments! Stockett grew up in the neighborhood where I attended college, and I have heard awesome things about it.

I just finished ROOMS by Jim Rubart. Still processing it, but very interesting premise.

Loved Watch Over Me by Parrish. Wow. Beautiful writing.

I am reading Offworld by Robin Parrish. I am about half way through and so far it is very exciting–very suspenseful and action packed. I also just finished Boneman’s Daughters by Ted Dekker–LOVED it!! He is one of my favorite authors and this proved to be a winner!

I read most any and every thing. Just finished a whole list of books for a YA book conference next weekend. Even though it is about a 16 year old, I very much enjoyed reading Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson. It is about a young girl who inherits a homestead in Montana from an uncle she never knew about. When he dies, she takes on the challenge of homesteading herself. It portrays a determined young woman and obstacles she faces in Montana during World War I. Very well written.

Just finished “White Picket Fences” by Susan Meissner. Another winner! :)

Finished up The Transformation by Terri Kraus over the weekend. Nice, different, kind of literary, but didn’t like the pace of the story. I don’t need everything to read at breakneck speed but this one just seemed to drag a bit, for me.

Now reading Watch Over Me by Christa Parrish.

Actually, I’ve been trying to read The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Someone gave it to me for my birthday, but I don’t think I can finish it. He is so obviously anti-Christian that it keeps taking me out of the story. I loved the last She Reads selections, so I’m going to try some of the ones above!

14 Colette October 20, 2009 at 8:00 am

I just finished My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I’ve read one other book of hers. She writes about very difficult topics and while My Sister’s Keeper is well written, the end is so tragic that I was sobbing for the last 2 chapters. I think I am glad I read it, but it was a hard read. It will be awhile before I read another of Ms. Picoult’s books.

Okay ladies I’m going to BEG and GROVEL here! lol You absolutely HAVE TO choose “A Familiar Stranger” by Christina Berry for your Spring/Summer reads! You won’t regret your decision and I think you’ll get alot of feedback from this novel. If you choose it, I’ll even begin the discussion about the book because it’s that good!!!!! I know I’m just a nobody, but I am a voracious reader who often reads a book per day and this was one book that I didn’t want to end and kept me glued from beginning to end.

Have I worked my magic and put the little “book bug” in your brain that is now running round and round, interrupting your sleep saying: “A Familiar Stranger”….”A Familiar Stranger”….lol

Cheers and hope everyone has a great day!

I’m reading Frasier Island by Susan Paige Davis. I’ve just started reading it . It looks like it will be a good read. There are 2 more books after that in the series; Abiding Marie and Inside story.
